1. Comment with "May the odds be /ever/ in your favor!"
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Post the names of five fictional characters whose names begin with that letter, and your thoughts on each. The characters can be from books, movies, or TV shows

[livejournal.com profile] earthstar_moon gave me the letter E. If you'd like to see the first batch of letter E candidates, please check out this entry.

1) Elizabeth Bennett, Pride & Prejudice - I think we can all agree that Elizabeth Bennett is awesome. And the way that Jane Austen uses her character to poke holes (and fun) at the social expectations of the day was brilliant. She's a strong female lead, who wants to live her own life and while there are certain social constraints she must abide by, she wants to bow to no one.

2) Ermengarde, A Little Princess - I always felt awful when Sara lost everything, but the fact that even though she's lost all of her material wealth, she still had Ermengarde's friendship somehow made everything better. Ermengarde, who is introduced as being so shy and aware that she's not smart or pretty, risks everything to maintain her friendship with Sara even though it's considered socially unacceptable. As a girl I always felt that it was a sign of hope, that things would eventually get better for Sara and that everything would be okay in the end.

3) Eyal Lavine, Covert Affairs - Oh man. Where to start? Eyal started off as a contact of Annie's in one episode, but apparently was popular enough in the fandom that he was brought back for two more episodes and Oded Fehr is willing to come back and do more episodes if asked. He's a great foil to Annie. She's all rookie optimism, he's the jaded one with the experience. On top of which they are HOT together - I always feel like my TV is going to explode from all of the hot they produce.

4) Ernie, Sesame Street - ♫Rubber ducky, you're the one...♫ Honestly, I loved Ernie when I was a kid. I couldn't miss a segment with him. Or Super Grover, but that's an entirely different entry. He was a little out there, which resonated with me. I was always the odd duck out, in my own little world, doing my own thing and to a degree so was Ernie. I'm a bit neater than he is, though. XD

5) Emily Gilmore, Gilmore Girls - Oh where to even begin? I sometimes saw my grandmother in Emily - domineering, micromanaging, do as I say right now or I will make your life hell. I could see a lot of my family in Gilmore Girls, actually, but the parallels between Emily and Lorelai and my grandmother and my mother was eerie. Ultimately I love that Emily is an extremely complex character and that as the series progresses we get to see more of what's underneath the iron lady veneer.

Wow, that was actually pretty difficult. Having done "E" before I didn't want to repeat so I had to wrack my brain coming up with five more characters with "E" names. Apparently fictional characters with "E" names are kind of rare. I had to dig into guest characters and children's programming to come up the full list. o.O'

This morning I woke up with the Queen Mother of all tension headaches. My alarm went off at seven, but I preferred to stay dead, so I turned it off and crashed for another hour and a half. By that point my body needed food (and painkiller) so I forced myself to get up and eat, downed some pain pills, and took a shower.

I felt a little better, but about an hour later the nausea hit, so I curled up on the couch with [livejournal.com profile] sideshow_ericka's copy Stardust, which is thankfully in a large enough type that it doesn't hurt to read. I have a feeling that the rest of today will be spent sitting on the couch, either watching movies or just staying as still as possible and trying not to get sick.

I think the way I sleep is the primary cause of these headaches. I suppose I could start training myself to sleep on my back, as being a side sleeper seems to be causing me ridiculous amounts of pain. And several tension headaches. It's getting old - and fast.

I finally finished my Avatar: The Last Airbender mood theme and got it installed yesterday. Since I'm HTML incompetent, I had to do it the long way. The whole time I was listening to Rob Paulsen's podcast and laughing manically. It was really hilarious to listen to both Billy West and Dee Bradly Baker, the latter going into Appa, Momo, and Perry the Platypus on command.

In other news, I've decided that I need to start sketching again, and so I just cranked out a few sketches of buttocks, a face, and a few hands. I think I'll work on the individual parts before I start drawing whole people again. I really could benefit from a life drawing class, though I suppose I could beg my husband to strip down and model for me.

This weekend is shaping up to be pretty chill, especially since I'm not at Sakura-con running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Rather than being stressed about con, I'm happily sitting at home this weekend, sketching and watching TV and best of all I get to have Easter Dinner with my family. I've been tasked with bringing a dessert, which will be angel food cake with fresh whipped cream and strawberries.

There's probably some incidental cleaning that should be done, but I just haven't felt the urge to do it yet.

It's weird, because I usually spend the first Wednesday of the month scrambling around, attempting to keep everything in order because stuff has to get done and I'm one one person and ZOMG WHY WON'T THIS DOCUMENT PRINT?!

Today has been oddly calm. I'm not behind in any way, shape, or form, and in fact I'm just sort of kicking it until I can go make copies and pick up meeting snacks. Which I'll be doing after one so I miss the lunch hour traffic.

In other news, I started up a Tumblr account which you can follow here. It's primary focus is fandom and other things that I like. Favorite movies, TV shows, squealing over .gif sets and so on. I won't be doing any hard core blogging there because, well, that's why I have this.

Apparently last night Cartoon Network did a one time relaunch of their Toonami block, which was awesome, but I crashed before I could watch any of it. Of course most of what they were showing I own on DVD (Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star) so I can watch them whenever I want. But the nostalgia goggles were on last night, and in that respect that was pretty cool.

I briefly toyed with the idea of doing an April's Fools Day prank on my friends and family on Facebook, and then realized the potential backlash could be reality shattering, so I decided not to. Because jokingly announcing that you're pregnant on Facebook has potential world ending consequences and I don't want to say, "Seriously, look at the date," every time my phone rings. If I didn't think I'd get killed by my family, I might actually seriously consider it just to screw with my friends, but even I'm not that cruel.

In other news, I'm doing laundry, the wind is blowing, I need to call my dad to check in (he sent an email this morning about his potential cancer treatment which is some sort of non-radioactive type that's being pioneered at the University of Florida, which means a temporary move to Jacksonville for the duration of his treatment) and then I contemplate my navel because I have no idea what else I should do today.

And before I forget, here's the dress I made for my uncle's party this summer:

It's a dress! )

I'm pleased with how it turned out. The skirt isn't perfect, but my sewing machine's tension was being fussy again so the gathering on the waist wasn't as nice as it could have been. However I managed to install a zipper that doesn't look completely shitty, and overall the fit is perfect. And the best part is that I know I'll be the only one at the party wearing that dress. No off the rack for me, thank you. :D

Hmm, other than that, nothing exciting here. If it weren't blowing so bad I might attempt to dig out my kite and go to the park, but the wind is too much (as usual) so no kite flying for me. Boo.

Taken from [livejournal.com profile] americanfairy:

The True Fan
OOC is blasphemy, canon is everything.

Once you fall in love with a movie, book or TV series, you are loyal like an old dog. You take fanfiction quite serious and use it as a substitute after the canon ran out.

You are probably a walking dictionary of your favourite fandom and you are picky about what you write and read. The closer to the "real thing" fanfiction is, the more you like it.

You rather explore a character in all depth, see new sides and learn more about them than creating new characters or mix up the situations they are in.

Y'know, I actually believe this. And if you feel so inclined, you can take the quiz here. You will have to create an OkCupid account to see your results but you don't have to do anything with it after that.

Or you could do more quizzes. XD

I had someone bring this to my attention (Thanks, "Raksha"!) that my journal default does not allow for anonymous posting. Seeing as some people might wander over here from fanfiction.net, I've opted to sticky this post at the top and open up the comments to everyone who wants to drop me a note.

I do want to lay down a few comment rules:

1) Being rude will not get you any sort of special attention. Wait, no, yes it will. It will get your comment deleted and you will be ignored.

2) Please use the subject line, especially if you're commenting Anonymously. As a general rule, it would also help me keep things straight and know how to best respond to your comment.

3) I will try to get back to you. It might take me a few days (I can't be immediate on everything, though I certainly try!) but I'll get there eventually. Please be patient. It'll be worth it, I promise.

4) Constructive comments are always appreciated. You've noticed typos, spelling errors, grammatical problems and/or plot issues and want to let me know? Go for it, but please remember Rule 1 (no, no, not "Never screw over your partner" or "Never let suspects stay together"). If you're rude about it I have no incentive to listen to you.

5) If you want to discuss something with me, go right ahead and start asking questions. I'll answer them to the best of my ability. The answers may not be the ones that you want, but they'll be the ones that you'll most likely need, especially if it's a question of why I chose a particular characterization, MacGuffin, etc.

I think that about sums things up now. I'm willing to answer questions and talk over choices I've made with my writing/art/etc. if you want. I like to think that I'm a fairly approachable person, amiable and polite at best and downright snarky when annoyed. I do not tolerate bullshit in any form. Be courteous and I'll be courteous in kind. If too many people abuse this, I will shut it down. Don't be the ass-hat that causes this to be shut down.

And remember, everyone, Wheaton's Law: DON'T BE A DICK.

And then there were LULZ. )

I cannot get over the ridiculousness of this list. Seriously. Though meeting the newest love of my life to the theme from The Mickey Mouse Club is a little strange. Same goes for making a last stand to "Kokomo."

I wonder about my taste in music sometimes.

Here, have a song. The composer, David Lanz, wrote this song for his wife, Alicia. He didn't have a title for it, so she suggested "Courage of the Wind." The name stuck and the rest is history. I have a certain fondness for the song, as it's one that my mother played often when I was a girl.

If I'm feeling up to it, I might hand draw you all a quick Valentine in Photoshop. We'll see how busy I am later. <3

and

Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little, cheap, cheap, cheap, talk a lot, pick a little more...

I went to go see the a local high school's production of The Music Man last night. Is it obvious?
mercy_angel_09: (Hakkai!Sanzo)
When five notes into the new song you can immediately identify it - and as a song that you wouldn't normally associate with the channel you're currently listening to.

So remember that Yoko Kanno channel I made?

Currently playing David Lanz and Paul Speer's "First Light." And I knew that it was "First Light" five notes into the song.

Cue the, "WTF, Pandora, this is the Yoko Kanno channel. I'll make that David Lanz channel eventually..."
mercy_angel_09: (Nathan)
So that addiction to Pandora I was talking about two entries ago?

Yeah, it's a fully fledged confirmed addiction. I have a Yoko Kanno station now. BECAUSE SHE IS AWESOME. The current track is off of the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack. I'm in music heaven right now.

In other news, I'm writing more fanfiction using the tried and true methods of Word of the Day prompts - for Gundam Wing of all things. I'm also working on chapter 9 of Boxes in the Attic, which will hopefully conclude in chapter 10. I'm finding it a little slow going, if only because most of the major revelations were done in the first few chapters. Hm. I should have started on the ground level.

Anyway.

So yes, I'm still writing. And once Boxes in the Attic is done, I'll start some Haven WOTD fics. The selection from Wordsmith.org is pretty good, and a lot of the words fit the show so ridiculously well that the drabbles more or less write themselves. It's pretty fun, actually. So no, if you were wondering, I have not abandoned Boxes, it's just being difficult and I will finish it when I finish it.

I've been told that I look like a cross between Brooke Shields and Anne Hathaway.

Honestly, I don't know who I looks like. I've posted pictures of me here before, so who do you think I look like?
mercy_angel_09: (Yoda)
I'm a fan of my bed.

It's big. It's cozy, especially when my husband isn't hogging the covers.

Anyway.

I stayed up late with [livejournal.com profile] forgotten_relic, finally turning in at 1:30 this morning. I managed to pull myself out of bed at just after nine, grabbed my Aperture mug filled with coffee (the cake may be a lie, but the coffee isn't), and settled on the couch to surf teh interbuttz. I made sure to post on my brother's Facebook wall for his birthday (he's 26 today), and yesterday most of the family got together to celebrate my grandpa's birthday a day early. (Yes, my brother and our maternal grandpa have the same birthday. It's a family thing, apparently, to share a birthday with another family member.)

Also, today, at least according to LJ, is [livejournal.com profile] faithchan's birthday, so a very happy birthday to her! I hope it's wonderful!

Tomorrow is my husband's birthday, but we're going out to dinner tonight because we figured trying to do it tomorrow would be too hectic. Since he doesn't want a cake, I'm making a blueberry pie (unless he wants a different kind of pie...I should probably check with him) instead. This is going to be my first attempt at making crusts from scratch, which could go horribly, horribly wrong. Or it could just right and I get a perfect, flaky crust.

If everything turns out, tomorrow the "Food Porn" album on Facebook will have a few new additions. (Goober that he is, he's not allowing me to play with my cake decorating supplies. So he'll probably end up with slits in the crust in the shape of a cake because that's how I roll.)

Anyway, I'm more or less just killing time until the Pro-Bowl starts and I'll watch some of that before we go out for dinner. Seattle went from having one person selected to five when four other people dropped out due to either illness or injury. As it stands the Seahawks did okay this past season and I really feel that they're on the right track to give the 49ers a run for the money next season.

I think that sums up everything for me at the moment. Life's been pretty quiet around here. It's been warm (today it's in the high fifties) and kind of wet, but it's always possible that we'll get hit with another snowstorm. I would not be against that, especially since I'm officially off of crutches I can actually go play in it. (Though first I should consider hitting up either Big 5 or REI to find snow pants. Wet jeans suck.)

Okay, I have no idea if this will really make an impact. Really, for it to make an impact it would have to go international. And hey, I don't see why it couldn't. But I think that it has the potential to show the MPAA and the RIAA to see what happens when people really decide to not buy.

However, I think to really further the impact, writing a well thought out and polite letter to both organizations to explain why you are not buying during the month would do the trick. Yes, you can boycott something, but tell them why. Don't let them just think, "Eh, someone else will pick up the slack."

As it stands there don't appear to be any movies or music that I absolutely have to have. I'll survive the month. I'd suspend all Netflix viewing, but I still pay for the service regardless of whether I'm watching anything streaming or getting the DVDs. Furthermore, if you really need to buy movies or musics or book, look for self-published materials. Those are produced by people who are not part of the large corporations that support SOPA and PIPA. Both the Kindle Store and the Nook store offer great deals on self-published works. Also consider what's available for free, on line. Fictionpress.net allows aspiring authors to post their work online for free, via Fanfiction.net's original content site. Many weblit authors have their own blogs and sites where the publish their stories. Independent musicians also operate with their own websites where you can listen to their music streaming.

Now, ultimately I believe that while this won't make a long term impact (like not buying *anything* for a whole financial quarter quite possibly could), it might do enough to make the execs sit up and say, "Hey now wait a minute..."

Now, if we collectively decided to boycott buying anything for a whole quarter (three months), then that theoretically could put enough of a dent in their wallets to REALLY make them take notice. Low sales for three months isn't exactly something to sneeze at. Even when you're as big as the MPAA and RIAA.
