mercy_angel_09: (Luna Lovegood)
I went to go see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey last night with [livejournal.com profile] sideshow_ericka since she wanted to see it again and I wanted to see it, period. Given the scope of the film, and of course various additions and expansions to make it mesh better with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it's definitely one of those movies that's best seen in theaters.

We went to a 9:00 PM showing, which meant that there were only a few people in the theater. I got a small bag of popcorn because I knew I'd get hungry and a small bottle of water so I could take my various pills at 9. I enjoyed it, liking the overall feel of the additions from the appendices from the Lord of the Rings and other supplemental materials, which again ties it in better with the trilogy. As we left the theater I knew I was ready to re-read the book.

In other news my new medications are helping me breathe better, but I'm still coughing. It's not nearly as bad nor as frequent as it was, but it's still niggling. Of course I've only been on the medication for less than a week, and I'm supposed to assess how I feel after a month. So far everything's fine, except the Flonase makes me really fuzzy for about an hour after I take it before it clears up and I'm fine.

Husband also scheduled eye appointments for me and him next week. I haven't had an actual eye exam in over a decade (I want to say my dad got me an exam when we were down in Miami for a visit because I had casually mentioned I hadn't had one since I was ten and that had been six or seven years prior), so clearly it's time. I don't think I need glasses (I can tell the grass still has individual blades), but a full exam certainly isn't going to hurt anything.

I suppose that the one movie that I "must-see" every holiday season is White Christmas. (You know, the one that prompts Clark Griswold to quip, "We'll have the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny Fucking Kaye!") My mom recorded it off TV years ago, and we always made time to watch it during the holiday season. Then a few years ago my mom bought me a copy of the movie on DVD, which I now watch when I decorate the Christmas tree on the day after Thanksgiving.

There is also another movie that I used to watch every single holiday season - A Muppet Christmas Carol.

I don't remember exactly when my parents decided that it was the movie we would all watch on Christmas Eve before bed, but apparently that was one. A few years ago it was another one that I got on DVD, but for the last couple of years I haven't been able to watch it as my husband's family celebrates Christmas on Christmas Eve. The celebration seems to run extra late for the last few years, so I might try and watch the movie Friday afternoon this year.
mercy_angel_09: (Annie and Auggie)
On Facebook, my brother posted that he's watching Van Wilder. The temptation to quip, "Oh, you're watching the movie version of your collegiate career?" is very, very strong and it's taking every single ounce of willpower I possess not to. But I want to, so very, very badly. Seriously, the kid has been in college for the last seven years. It's about damn time he graduated with a B.A. in something.

In which I muse about a good franchise gone bad. )
mercy_angel_09: (Ike vs. The Black Knight)
Yesterday I realized that it was probably a bad idea for me to be alone all day. I was having some issues processing, and being alone with the thoughts was resulting in spontaneous bursts of crying, which really weren't accomplishing anything, including making me feel better. So I called [livejournal.com profile] sideshow_ericka and asked if I could just come sit on her couch yesterday and molest the cats. She consented and actually talked to me about it, which helped tremendously.

Then she and her roommate Krys invited me to go see Thor last night. I called my husband to see if he wanted me to wait so we could do a date night, but my husband is 1) cheap and 2) infinitely more patient that I am, so he said that I could go and that he had no problems waiting until it came out on Blu-Ray. I was impressed with how Kenneth Branagh (yeah, THAT Kenneth Branagh) handled the material. A blend of Norse mythology with the the Marvel influences and just enough Shakespeare that it actually created something interesting to watch. And yes, it wasn't as good as either Iron Man movie, but it was still good. Now I just have to wait for Captain America, which feels like it's going to take FOREVER. I want it now!!! /whine

Other than that, I'm doing okay. The grieving process takes time, and I certainly know that Grandma would yell at me to stop moping about and get on with my life if she were still here. I've decided that I should at least buckle down and go through all of the dues records and figure out invoices. And while that's probably not most people's idea of fun, it will keep me busy and from dwelling too much.

Also, thank you for all of the support from my friends, both in real life and online. You've all been a tremendous help during this difficult time.
mercy_angel_09: (Default)
I'm taking a short break after my shower to write a quick entry. First of all, I've gone in a completely different direction with NaNoWriMo. I was originally going to write a follow-up to Magnolia Blossoms - last year's completed effort - when I had a little brain storm that wouldn't go away. So I opened Word, started jotting everything down, and lo and behold, I have a completely different story idea for this November. You can read more about it at my NaNo LJ, [livejournal.com profile] penismighter. Also there is the link to my official NaNo profile. :)

Secondly, today will be spend doing more cleaning. The oven needs to be pre-washed (to get the worst of the gunk out, and may be assisted by boiling some water, sticking it in a dish, and letting the oven steam for twenty minutes or so) before running the self-cleaning cycle, tables and whatnot need to be dusted, and the whole apartment should be vacuumed for good measure. I'm also going to run the excess plastic bags down to be recycled as well as pick up a few boxes to start putting Goodwill bound clothing into.

Of course, I still have all of the usual things to do today - doing dishes and making the bed - never mind that all I want to do is play around with the special features on Beauty and the Beast. Also, I want to watch all of Saiyuki again. Maybe what I do is put Saiyuki in as I work so I have background noise. Besides, I think my major plans for once the cleaning is done is to cut out the pattern for the Christmas party dress. I'll probably go and pick up the fabric tomorrow. I'm going with that dusty, rose pink. It has light peach undertones, but I can wear it. Plus, I have a coupon for 50% off of a fabric purchase. Now seems like a pretty good time to go and get it, that way I can get the dress sewn before NaNo starts.

In other news, I finished Naked Heat last night, but that's an entry in and of itself. And in case you were wondering, there really is a Firefly reference on page 141.
mercy_angel_09: (Meeko compass)
First off, acting legend Tony Curtis passed away this morning at the age of 85. Needless to say, today will be spent on the couch, watching my two favorite Tony Curtis movies: Some Like It Hot and The Great Race. I'll take that time to cut out the pattern pieces for my Christmas party dress. If I have left over time, I'll start on one of my zombie cross stitch projects. :3

Secondly, I went to my baby brother's football game yesterday. He was supposed to be starting, but at the last minute the coach changed the plays and so he only took part in ten plays or so for the whole game. They won (which is better than their last two games where they got totally spanked), and I'll be attending the next game to see if they can win again. I just feel bad that my brother, who's working his butt off, is hardly getting any time to play. Hopefully that will change next week.

Lastly, I need to do a little touch up cleaning around the apartment. I was noticing that the cobwebs are taking over again and I should probably do something about that. Since I managed to get the balcony under control, it's high time that I get interior of the apartment under control as well. I also need to look into possibly hanging up costumes that haven't been put away yet, because they've officially taken over the guest bed (but admittedly, that's not hard to do with the crinoline sitting on top of it).
mercy_angel_09: (Meeko compass)
So when my husband bought the BluRay player for the HTPC, he also bought Wii Fit Plus.

I've decided that it's worth while to start up again, and hopefully this time I'll stick with it. I may need my friends to occasionally kick me in the behind to stick with it. If you feel like dropping me a comment asking how my progress is going, go right ahead. I encourage you to kick me in the butt as often as you deem fit, at least as exercising goes. The problem with the Tri-Cities is that it's ridiculously hot during the days, the apartment complex's gym doesn't have a AC, and I can't seem to get my butt out of bed early enough to go skating down by the river.

Not much else going on. It sounds like the girls and I will be heading out to see Eat. Pray. Love. this evening, which could be a lot of fun. We'll be going out to eat (sushi and teriyaki) first and then to the movie, mostly to curb any snaking at the theater. We'll probably get a bottle of water and a box of candy to share and call it good. Too expensive, otherwise. :p

mercy_angel_09: (Shigure WTF)
Sooooo...it has been sounding like the TARDIS is landing in my kitchen/dining room for the last twenty minutes. :3

A while back I decided that while I ♥ Firefly and Captain Mal, I needed to change up my cell phone scheme. My current wall paper is from Miss Mimi-Na (OHMIGOD! I THOUGHT I WAS SPECIAL!) and my general ringtone is the Series 4 (new series, mind you) Doctor Who theme. My message alert is the sound of the TARDIS engine. So every time I get a text message or a voice mail, I hear a key on a piano's bass string.

My little sister just spent the last twenty minutes sending me texts.

My husband was wondering if I had been chosen as the Doctor's next companion. (*snorts* I wish.)

We finished with series four this evening, and tomorrow I'll probably put on "The Next Doctor" and "Planet of the Dead" while I cut out fabric for skirts. Well, one skirt since I got the first one cut out while watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

...Whoops, got distracted. Where was I?

Oh yes, my Doctor Who themed cell phone. It's even blue. :3 But really, I should move on.

In any case, I have a couple of sewing projects, and if I can ever get a hold of anyone in my family, I know if I'm making my cousin's fiancee's wedding dress. Apparently she wanted my grandma to make it, but Grandma's pretty busy so I was volunteered for the job. I have no idea what's supposed to be going on with that as I haven't heard anything from anyone, other than that my mother volunteered me to make the dress. It sort of makes me wonder if I should try and get into a fashion school so that I can open up a dress shop or something.

Thankfully, I have movies on the way. I ordered a copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (I know how it ends, so you really don't need to give into the meme on that one), Alice in Wonderland (went to go see that one in theaters) and because Barnes & Noble was having a Buy 2 Get 1 Free special, I picked up a copy of Iron Man for free. It's a ridiculously fun movie, and it was free. And as nice as it is to be able to watch stuff streaming for free on Netflix or simply getting the DVDs in the mail, there are some movies which are better when you can just pick them off the shelf and watch them whenever. Background noise is always nice as I'm working.

Anyway, I've reached the point where I'm just rambling. I should probably go to bed.

mercy_angel_09: (Meeko compass)
Hot on the heels of the TV meme, a movie meme!! Courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] lukecanwaltz88.

Comment with "ACTION!" and I will give you ten actors and ten actresses. Then post in your livejournal with your favorite films of theirs.

Ten Guys, Ten Girls, this is bound to get ugly. Or hilarious. I'll take either, at this point. )

Whee! That was fun!! Anyone else wanna play?

mercy_angel_09: (Heavyarms)
Hubby and I had a "Date Day." We went to lunch at Famous Dave's for BBQ (mmmm...smoked pork...) before heading to see Iron Man 2. I liked it, but I'm a total dork and I love superhero movies (and Marvel comics in general, heh). I'm excited for Thor and of course, The Avengers. \o/

Today's BPAL scent is Cordelia from the Illyria collection - based on the works of William Shakespeare. It has notes of lilac, lemon, green tea, wisteria, osmanthus, white cedar, and Chinese musk, and I like it, and I do like how it smells on me, but I'm not sure that I want to buy a bottle. Jury is still out on that one and I'll have to wear it a few more times to truly gauge if I want to buy it.

Anyway, off to play some vidya games. Ta!

Stop raping my childhood. PLEASE.

mercy_angel_09: (Amon)
Plan for tomorrow:

1) Go pick up The Princess and the Frog and Ponyo on DVD. Because I'm lame and didn't do it today.

2) Watch The Quiet Man in the afternoon.

3) Pick up some honest to God whiskey. I have Irish in me, too, damn it. I need a decent Irish whiskey in the apartment at all times.

4) Watch The Boondock Saints with the hubby.

5) Boil the hell out of a corned beef brisket all afternoon. Also steam cabbage and prepare mashed potatoes. (Mashed potatoes will not be green, but will be sculpted into the shape of Devil's Tower.)

6) Drink something. I've already started by having a Scarlett O'Hara (which is sitting next to me as I type this). I'll probably shoot some whiskey tomorrow. Maybe make an Irish coffee. Or any of the OTHER "Irish" cocktails I have recipes for in my multiple cocktail recipe books.

And that's about it. Somewhere in all of there, I'm going to run on the treadmill for a bit. Since, you know, I actually managed to remember to lift weights today.

mercy_angel_09: (Meeko compass)
Okay, since it's pretty obvious that no one else on my f-list is going to comment on the movie quote meme, I'm going to give the answers to the ones that no one got. :3 Well, except Trav but she Googled them so that doesn't count. ^^

Now, all of the quotes come from movies that are in my collection (well, except from True Lies and Practical Magic, but I've seen them enough times I might as well own them). So, starting with the first one that no one got, number 5.

"Story of my life. I always get the fuzzy end of the lillipop."

I quoted this to Jeff Nimoy, and he knew what I was talking about. Or maybe he Googled it. Which wouldn't surprise me. ANYWAY. The quote is said by Sugar in Some Like It Hot. If you haven't seen it, it's a send up to gangster films. And you get to see Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in drag. As Daphne and Josephine. XD And one of Marylin's finest performances, even if you can tell she's started the downhill slide like whoa. I found it on DVD and my husband bought it for me. (Because he's awesome like that.) It's a great movie, and in my opinion deserving of the top spot on AFI's 100 Years...100 Laughs.

Number 7:

"He's not the Messaih. He's a very naughty boy!"

From all the quotes in Monty Python's The Life of Brian, think that this was one of the least offensive. But hell, it's Monty Python so it's worth quoting anyway, right? I went to see this with an old boyfriend when they re-released it in theaters a while back (between classes because I had five hours to kill!) and then my parents got it for me on DVD on Easter a few months later. (BEST. EASTER. GIFT. EVER.) I tend to break it out around Easter now. Some people watch those Biblical epics, I watch Monty Python. Like a good Catholic. XD

Number 10:

"Half of writing history is hiding the truth."

Ahhhh, Mal-isms. You know, Mal Reynolds may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but his powers of observation can be spot on. Of course this is from Serenity upon the revelation of what REALLY happened on Miranda. I really wanted a quote from Mal and not an obvious one - so I picked this one that is reflective of recorded history as a whole.

Number 11:

"Price check on prune juice, Bob, price check on prune juice."

When picking a quote delivered by Robin Williams, picking the right one is key. I could have used anything from the numerous films he's done, but I went with one of my all time favorites from Fern Gully. Batty Koda MAKES that movie. And Williams's manic performance as a fruit bat who's been experimented on is epic.

Number 12:

"When what's left of you gets around to what's left to be gotten, what's left to be gotten won't be worth getting, whatever it is you've got left."

This line is delivered beautifully by Danny Kaye in White Christmas. As Phil Davis he's a wannabe performer who has the luck of saving the life of Bob Wallace (played by Bing Crosby), a well known showman who's in the same company during WWII. Once the war ends the two men form a partnership and end up in a snowless Vermont inn over Christmas. Throw in Rosemary Clooney (George's aunt) and Vera Ellen as a sister act who capture the hearts of Wallace and Davis, and character actors Dean Jagger and Mary Wickes and you have one of the greatest casts ever. And the titular "White Christmas" performance at the end makes every holiday merry and bright. It's my own tradition to watch this movie as I decorate.

Master?

Anyway, I'm doing my nails and watching the end of Meet the Robinsons on Disney Channel.  I'm waiting for my nails to dry enough for me to start doing my hair, though I'm still not entirely sure what I'm going to do with it.  Curl it, sure, but after that I don't know.  Pull it back, leave it down, put it half up?  I know the bride said that she doesn't care what we wear, but I do want to look nice.  It's just how I was brought up.  Though I'm still toying with "The Bride's Mafia" look.  X3

At any rate, I think I might go grab the hair dryer and set it to it's cool setting and blow dry my nails to speed along the process.  And then go waffle over shoes.  With some help with [profile] forgotten_relic who is here with me in spirit.

mercy_angel_09: (Witch Hunter Robin)
[livejournal.com profile] travellyr graduated from Central Washington University yesterday, which meant we all went up to Ellensburg yesterday to watch her walk across the stage and receive her diploma. Other people who went up included her parents and brother, aunt, uncle, adopted parents (as in the parents of friends who have known Trav since high school), and a whole gaggle of friends, including [livejournal.com profile] desertkitsune , [livejournal.com profile] irksnapple , [profile] forgotten_relic , [livejournal.com profile] chaosblue , Ericka, Sabrina and myself. After we all went to lunch at a local Mexican restaurant, which is one of the few places in town that can fit 20+ people in one room at one time at one table. Lunch was on Trav's Dad, and after that the parents and other relatives left while us girls hung around Ellensburg until the Bar Noir started at nine. This included a run to Fred Meyer where we poked around and bought some stuff (I got a new bra and some sun glasses) before heading downtown to poke around the shops there.

So after a quick stop in at a piercing and tattoo parlor (where they had some really awesome clothes and jewelry), we stopped into a shop that specializes in imports. We affectionately called it the Import Store - most of their stuff comes from India and Africa. I was poking around the sale rack looking at tops and skirts before I wandered in and found a cute sundress. I wasn't sure if I was going to get it, but I didn't see the harm in trying it on - it's a very pretty cerulean blue, teal like color with a very interesting pattern in neutral tones. I came out of the dressing room looking a little nervous. I'm a little chubby and the dress doesn't exactly hide it well (well, it doesn't hide it at ALL). However there was no denying that my coloring works well with the color of the dress. I looked good which is surprising. So I made a $45 impulse buy yesterday (that's including tax), on a hand made silk dress from India. Now I have to find matching shoes.

Trav the grad bought some Henna, which Irk and Ericka used to create art on her back and legs. Of course, she also fell asleep with Kleenex shoved up her nose so she was making cute little snorting and snoring noise through out Kill Bill vol. 2. We also had the great BPAL (Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab) sniff-a-thon, where vials of perfume were passed around, tried on, and monitored to see how they aged and how our own body chemistry affected the scents. After Thai food, we all went out to Bar Noir, a faux bar in the back of a local art gallery where they show weird B movies and serve drinks and snacks while everyone sort of watches the movies, listens to music, and chat.  I was with Ericka and Sabrina so we couldn't hang around for too long because both had church today and we wanted to get home with enough time to get some sleep.

I got home at one, got to bed at one-thirty, and then was woken up at nine because my husband didn't know when I came in (he was fast asleep and there was no waking him), so he woke me up so I wouldn't get enough sleep.

Too bad I didn't get enough sleep ANYWAY.  So now I'm half asleep, not wanting to cook or do anything of importance (hey, I cleaned the damn bathroom and the bedroom today) and facing the prospect of actually having to cook even though all I want to do is sleep.

Movies, eh? )

No, seriously.  Check this out if you don't believe me.

SUPPOSEDLY if you've seen over 85 movies, you have no life. Mark the ones you've seen. There are 210 movies on this list. Put an S next to the movies you've Seen, add them up and change the header adding your number.

Have fun!

Now I've actually seen a lot more movies - movies that aren't on this list but should be.  The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, Psycho, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut (because everyone should be able to sing What Would Bryan Boitano Do? at the top of their lungs) and the Shrek movies.  Anything by Pixar (how is it that only Monsters, Inc. made the list?).

Well, now that my geekdom is confirmed, no use fighting it.
