Faaaaaabuloooooous!
Jan. 11th, 2010 04:15 pmI think I could have been an interior decorator at some time. I say this because once again I cleaned the apartment. There are still a few things that need to be scrubbed down, but all in all the place is pretty spotless. My husband and I finally have an end table AND lamps. B3 was the place to look - we got two table lamps and a floor lamp for less than $100. Best of all, they're a matching set. One lamp is on the book case between the dining room and the living room (finally putting light in an awkward to light place), one on the end table and one on the floor next to Dobby. Or...the poster of Dobby. XD
Best of all, everything is finally starting to look coordinated. The problem with being newlyweds is that often you're blending styles and stuff, which means everything is a hodgepodge until you can afford to get new stuff. The old couch was a five piece sofa with a hide-a-bed that was twenty years old. It really didn't match anything. The old dining room table was a simple round table with two kind of matching chairs. There was no room for an end table - so that was a non-issue. Finally my in-laws decided that they wanted a new dining room table and found one that the liked. Since their old table was still in good condition (just needed to be sanded and refinished) they gave it to me and my husband. The same thing happened again when they decided to get rid of their old sofa and recliner.
The sofa and recliner were half the age of the previous couch, and even though it lacks a hide-a-bed, we technically have enough room for the air mattress in the living room should we end up at over full capacity. However we now had need of a end table. For a while we used one of the chairs from the dining room table. There are two of us, we don't need to use all four. Of course for about six months we searched frantically for an end table. It had to be light colored, round, and not involve glass in any way. A few weeks back we finally found one that fit our needs and surprisingly worked well with our decor. Then over the weekend we found the lamp set, courtesy of my uncle from New York, who sent us one of those Visa gift cards that can be used anywhere. We used the whole thing on the lamps and only had to pay about six bucks out of pocket to make up the difference.
Now the apartment actually looks like people are living her for more than just a few months. Yes, everything has been unpacked, but the hodgepodge of furniture made it feel like a temporary thing. We get what's cheap because it's not like we're staying for very long.
Which reminds me...I wonder if we'll be moving or not. My husband's contract isn't for much longer, maybe two years tops, and it's entirely possible that I'll soon be living on the east coast. It's going to be tough, I'm sure. Yes, the internwebz is a great way to keep in touch with all of my friends who will all still be located here, but I'm still gonna miss them. Furthermore I get to go through that whole exciting prospect of making new friends wherever we end up.
