So that huge storm in the Pacific Northwest has finally caught up to me. I believe the snow hit at three am. I woke up about one needing water and nothing had happened, yet. When my husband got up this morning I woke up (partly because I crashed right after White Collar last night) and peeked outside. There wasn't a lot of snow, but it was still falling, and it's snowing harder now than when I officially got out of bed just after seven.

I'm finding my bum ankle to be something of a double edged sword. I don't get to go out and play in the snow, but on the plus side I get to sit around on the couch and watch it.

Since the weather seems to be getting worse, my husband texted me to let me know that he would probably be sent home early. The last time that happened it took him an hour to get home, and we live less than a mile from his office. I haven't heard if they've decided to send people home yet, but I feel that it's only a matter of time. In which case I will probably either 1) play Skyward Sword all afternoon or I'll 2) watch The Wallflower on Hulu. All in all, I know I'm not going anywhere this afternoon and I might as well make the best of being couch bound.

I ran out to Wally World to find a couple of gifts for the Birthday Party's White Elephant exchange. I managed to find one gift, and when I left, it had started to spit snow. I then ran to Toys-R-Us to find another gift (I had a very specific one in mind that I couldn't find at Wally World), and by the time I finished there, it was snowing harder.

After that I realized that I don't have a set of gloves that I can just leave with my trench coat, so I made one lat quick stop off at Freddy's where I found a lovely pair of Isotoner knit gloves that match my scarf on sale. By the time I left there it was snowing even harder.

And it's still going.

I'm an now drinking hot apple cider and soon I'll start off on NaNoWriMo for the day.

It snowed sometime during the night. That means that the roads are completely covered in snow and slush, and I still haven't had any winter driving experience in a front wheel drive car. I can rock in the show in a rear wheel drive car, but I've never actually driven in a front wheel drive. Hell if I know exactly how that happened, but I digress.

Anyway I'm going to bundle up and head out, and I'm going to try and find an empty parking lot to get my bearings in. The way we see it is that this is as bad as it's going to get as far as driving conditions go, so that if I can handle this I can theoretically throw anything else nature throws at us.

Wish me luck. I'll probably be back later to update how my little trip went.

Of what I've been dealing with today:

All this snow is wreaking havok on the community. )
mercy_angel_09: (Amon)
Not like it matters that I'm not writing for NaNo right now - I'm pretty far ahead so it's not like I have to write today. Obviously I still am, and I'll probably write tonight as I watch the finale of Dancing With the Stars, Skating With the Stars and Castle. I've written less than 500 words today, but it's less to do with being uninspired and more about "Oh hey, it's snowing!"

Speaking of snow, I mentioned last night that it was really coming down. When I woke up it was very lightly snowing and petered off after half an hour. At eleven thirty it was starting up again and by noon there's enough that it's starting to pile up again. Normally I wouldn't care and would just enjoy it, but I have a meeting for a fundraiser I'm working for at 5:15 tonight. I'm planning on leaving a hour before and spend some time checking out the library (it was remodeled last year and I am as yet to officially check it out) before going across the street to the meeting.

My car's battery is on the old side, so there was slight paranoia about if my car would even START. If it didn't it's not like it's a big deal to catch the bus, but I'd rather not. After some coughing and sputtering my car finally started up and purred quite nicely. I cleaned off the snow as I let her sit and warm up, before turning her off and heading back in to officially eat lunch. I'm going to have to clean off my car again, but it's better than having the three to four inches that was already on it to have an addition one to two inches.

That just leaves driving. Last year I never really had a reason to drive in the snow, and while the previous owner says that the car does well in the snow, I've never actually tested this for myself. Because it's warm enough out that the roads are just wet, I should be fine. I probably won't be doing any driving tomorrow because it's gonna be slicker than snot on a door knob. No chance of a Chinook blowing through either, because it's supposed to be cold and STAY cold through Thanksgiving.

On the plus side, theoretically it should be pretty and white as I decorate for Christmas this weekend.

Anyway, I should get back to NaNo - I have some tea and good music to write to.

So it's snowing. Like, A LOT.

It's going to be a white Thanksgiving where I live.

(Watch, in two days a Chinook wind is going to blow through and it will all melt.)

And guess who has a meeting she has to drive to tomorrow. X3 I didn't drive my car at all last year in the snow so I have no idea how it handles in the snow. I guess I shall find out tomorrow.

And now...an ode to the weather in haiku:

Snow lightly falling
Enveloping the world in
A blanket of white

And the full version in free form:

Snow
Lightly falling
Enveloping the world
In a blanket
Of white
Silence

So it finally snowed here. Not a lot, probably only half an inch, but it's pretty and snow, so I don't care. I'm just happy it's on the ground. They're calling for more, but the chances are not good. Sad.

Anyway, I'm currently watching football (the Seahawks aren't doing so well, but I didn't actually expect them to beat Houston, so whatever) and for the first three quarters of the game pinning the various pieces of [livejournal.com profile] chaosblue's dress. The skirt is completely pinned together, the front panels are currently pinned up the center and then ready to be pinned to each other, and the back panels are marked and ready to be sewn as well. So - PROGRESS! \o/ Hooray!

My brother will also be arriving within an hour or so, though who knows. I figure he'll arrive
after
the football game, which should be in about half an hour-ish, pending on how fast the game wraps up. Given the way the game is going, it'll be sooner rather than later. The guest room is ready, and maybe this year he'll actually sleep under the covers instead on top of them. I'm expecting his visit to go like last year's - a lot of time with him sitting on the couch, playing his Xbox with occasional friend visits. It's hard to say how many friends he'll be seeing, but thankfully I don't have to drive his butt all over town.

Meh, I'll probably start sewing this afternoon - I really don't have anything else I need to do. Thankfully the dress is only going to take a few days to actually sew together. Most of that time will be spent pinning, too. (Lots of pinning...especially in the skirt.) Also in preparation for the big end of the year bash I need to book a hotel room, which will not be at the same place as [livejournal.com profile] travellyr and [livejournal.com profile] sideshow_ericka because I want to be closer to [livejournal.com profile] chaosblue because I'm pretty sure there won't be a work surface for me to set up my sewing machine on. So if I have to be running back and forth to make adjustments, I'd rather not spend half an hour sitting in traffic to do it. So we'll see the girls at VooDoo Doughnut on Thursday.

Well, the game is pretty much over (the 2:00 warning just hit, so there's not much to do) so I'm gonna start in on the sewing.

First of all, meme from [livejournal.com profile] travellyr

Comment and I will comment back with a picture of the fictional character that most reminds me of you. Then post the same in your journal.

Secondly, today it's actually supposed to snow. The system was supposed to hit early this morning, but it's moving slower than anticipated so now it's going to hit this afternoon. Because there was supposed to be snow on the ground this morning, my husband and I went grocery shopping at eleven thirty last night so we could avoid driving in the snow this morning. Of course by doing so, we made sure that it wouldn't snow this morning.

At any rate we're gonna take it easy today. Play a few video games, kick back and relax, and wait to see if my brother is actually going to make it over tonight. It's entirely possible that he won't arrive until tomorrow afternoon. We'll see, and we'll also see if he drives me crazy in the short amount of time that he'll be here.

In other, more random news, my husband and I have a pot of water on the stove simmering, keeping the air in my apartment humid. Since it's been so cold with the heater going at full, the air had seriously dried everything out. My skin, my lips (which actually split because of it), and everything else. At any rate, it's noticeably more humid in my apartment, if the way my sinuses are draining is any indication. X3

Meh...I should probably go and take a shower. Because even though I don't need to go anywhere today, I should probably get myself clean if only because my hair is too greasy for my own like.

Winter had hit Tri-Town in full force, as it has been more or less snowing for a week straight.  There is easily half a foot of snow on the ground, if not more.  By the way, my car has rear wheel drive and therefore is lots of fun to drive the snow and ice.  As it stands, the last week has had regular highs of about twenty degrees, which means that we're not getting the usual melts, on top of the continuous storm that keeps dumping the white stuff.

I grew up in the Palouse, which is an area know for white winters.  I'm used to snow.  I love the snow.  However it's been YEARS since I've been in a snow storm like this one.  As a result I am cold and somewhat miserable, and yet loving every single second of it, if that makes any sense.  I love how magical the snow makes everything seem.  I love the layer of white that makes the world seem pristene and pure.

But the cold, oh lord, the COLD is starting to get to me.  I don't like to be cold, and I'm assuming that that's the Cuban in me.  As such, the highs in the twenties (with a wind chill making things feel closer to ten or colder) are getting straight to my core and freezin me.  The footy pajamas have been pulled out, folks.  I'm wearing pajamas with FEET.

And it's only going to get colder.

So [livejournal.com profile] desertkitsune called me Sunday (or was it an IM?) to see what I was doing tonight.  As it turns out she has a pair of tickets to see Lord of the Dance while it's here in Tri-Town.  Now, I'm fairly in touch with my Irish heritage and I love traditional Celtic music as well as step dancing.  She is every bit into her Irish heritage as I am, so this seemed like the greatest idea EVAR.  However the weather isn't cooperating with us, as it wants to dump MORE snow on us, starting tonight.

So, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.  I want to go see this because it's something that I probably won't get to ever see in person again, but if the weather is bad, I don't want to be out in it.  Hence the dilemma.  ><

I'm going to see what the weather does today, and perhaps it'll be decent enough that I can go and not have to worry about the awful weather (or not!).   Don't get me wrong, I love the snow.  I think it's wonderful during the winter, but oh my God, is this just INSANE.  We never have this much snow (and this was the year my husband said, "Don't worry, it should be mild") and I gotta say, I'm not really enjoying the constant feeling of cold that has seemed to permiate the very core of my being.
