My muse has a seriously case of Attention Deficit Oooh, Shiny!
She's currently been wrapped up in the Gundam Wing fandom and the Avatar: The Last Airbender fandom, leaving poor Haven high and dry.
But season three started shooting a few weeks ago, and Eric Balfour and Emily Rose are constantly tweeting photos and updates from the set. Suddenly my muse is all about finishing "Boxes in the Attic." This is a good thing, seeing as I'm down to the final chapter and the epilogue, and I started it early into season two.
I've always known how the story would go. I always knew it was about Nathan's journey, about making peace with his past, with his relationship with his father and his mother, and his developing feelings for Audrey. Obviously this became AU fairly early on as the fic developed its own path away from the series. And while a good deal of the problems have reached a decent amount of resolution within the first couple of chapters, I still feel that there are some things that he'll be sorting out in the last chapter, with the epilogue wrapping everything up. And yes, the goal is to get this finished by the time season 3 starts (which should be some time in June or July).
So! Onward!

The All Purpose Leave-Me-A-Note Post
Mar. 24th, 2012 12:10 pmI had someone bring this to my attention (Thanks, "Raksha"!) that my journal default does not allow for anonymous posting. Seeing as some people might wander over here from fanfiction.net, I've opted to sticky this post at the top and open up the comments to everyone who wants to drop me a note.
I do want to lay down a few comment rules:
1) Being rude will not get you any sort of special attention. Wait, no, yes it will. It will get your comment deleted and you will be ignored.
2) Please use the subject line, especially if you're commenting Anonymously. As a general rule, it would also help me keep things straight and know how to best respond to your comment.
3) I will try to get back to you. It might take me a few days (I can't be immediate on everything, though I certainly try!) but I'll get there eventually. Please be patient. It'll be worth it, I promise.
4) Constructive comments are always appreciated. You've noticed typos, spelling errors, grammatical problems and/or plot issues and want to let me know? Go for it, but please remember Rule 1 (no, no, not "Never screw over your partner" or "Never let suspects stay together"). If you're rude about it I have no incentive to listen to you.
5) If you want to discuss something with me, go right ahead and start asking questions. I'll answer them to the best of my ability. The answers may not be the ones that you want, but they'll be the ones that you'll most likely need, especially if it's a question of why I chose a particular characterization, MacGuffin, etc.
I think that about sums things up now. I'm willing to answer questions and talk over choices I've made with my writing/art/etc. if you want. I like to think that I'm a fairly approachable person, amiable and polite at best and downright snarky when annoyed. I do not tolerate bullshit in any form. Be courteous and I'll be courteous in kind. If too many people abuse this, I will shut it down. Don't be the ass-hat that causes this to be shut down.
And remember, everyone, Wheaton's Law: DON'T BE A DICK.

Addiction Confirmed
Feb. 11th, 2012 12:45 pmSo that addiction to Pandora I was talking about two entries ago?
Yeah, it's a fully fledged confirmed addiction. I have a Yoko Kanno station now. BECAUSE SHE IS AWESOME.The current track is off of the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack. I'm in music heaven right now.
In other news, I'm writing more fanfiction using the tried and true methods of Word of the Day prompts - for Gundam Wing of all things. I'm also working on chapter 9 of Boxes in the Attic, which will hopefully conclude in chapter 10. I'm finding it a little slow going, if only because most of the major revelations were done in the first few chapters. Hm. I should have started on the ground level.
Anyway.
So yes, I'm still writing. And once Boxes in the Attic is done, I'll start some Haven WOTD fics. The selection from Wordsmith.org is pretty good, and a lot of the words fit the show so ridiculously well that the drabbles more or less write themselves. It's pretty fun, actually. So no, if you were wondering, I have not abandoned Boxes, it's just being difficult and I will finish it when I finish it.

Sometimes the Plot Train gets derailed
Nov. 4th, 2011 02:46 pmSo my original idea for NaNoWriMo was a humorous, semi-autobiographical foray in to what it's like to be a girl in the various sci-fi and video game fandoms. It would be loosely based on the adventures of me and my friends in fandom and basically tossing the notion that all fans of sci-fi, anime and video games are slovenly, overweight white people who live in their mother's basement. Part of this stemmed from a lot of the criticisms against Team Unicorn FTW's "G33K & G4M3R GURL5" - mostly that no true geek looks like the member of Team Unicorn and obviously they aren't "real" geeks nor a real representation of the female geek and gaming community.
Well, it is a valid point that not all female geeks and gamers look like the members of Team Unicorn, but it's also a valid point that most female geek and gamers aren't overweight with skin conditions and no social life. I would say that most of us (myself included) fall into the "average" category. And like it or not, to claim that no true geek and gamer girl can look like anyone from Team Unicorn is insulting for all women in fandom. We come in all shapes and sizes, and for anyone to say otherwise is ignorant.
Anyway, what was supposed to be a light-hearted romp through high school while trying to keep fandoms a secret so as not to be a target of bullying, my novel had taken a decidedly darker turn. We now have, aside from the bullying angle I was already going to use, teen pregnancy, rape, suicide, and mental illness.
Did I mention that my novel was originally a comic effort?
Oh well. Nothing I can do about it now. The story has reached the point where it more or less writing itself down, with me making notes of important names and events as they get mentioned. A lack of continuity is a major pet peeve for me (which makes my love of Haven hilarious, given that continuity isn't exactly one of the series's strong points), and I hate to think that I opened up a monster truck sized plot hole because I can't keep names/dates/major events straight.
(And just a heads up, my current word count is 6,513/50,000, which means I still have roughly 100 more words to write today to reach today's "par" word count, and another 1,700 to reach the roughly 2,000 words I like to reach per day.)

So I'm having some issues trying to write the latest chapter of Boxes in the Attic. They're cleaning out the dining room, which is more or less a time capsule form the day Nathan's mother died. It's maybe been dusted a handful of times since she passed, but nothing's been moved. I always sort of figured that the dining room could be used as a sort of way for Audrey to really get a feeling of what the day to day live in the Wuornos house was like when Nathan was a child. I really can't work the Audrey angle like I did previously, mostly because you can only say, "I'm Audrey, and Lucy, and who knows how many people I've been before that," before your audience is groaning at you.
And speaking of Haven, I bought the first season on Blu-ray off of Amazon. It was only $25.99, which is a fantastic deal considering that it's usually $49.99, if not more - depending on the retailer, natch. Not that I really needed it, but I really wanted it, and given the price, it would have been stupid to say no. Besides. Commentaries. I am a huge fan of them. I really like the cast commentaries because you get some insight as to how they approached certain scenes and played them a certain way, but the crew commentaries are also good. They explain jokes that you might not catch, or they point out a plot point that will become relevant in future scenes or even even episodes. Most of the "Making Of" featurettes were posted on Haven's home page, so I've already seen them. But it's good to know that I can sit down and watch them whenever I want. I don't think most of them are still up on SyFy.com or Hulu anymore.
In other news, it was time for a layout change. Yes, it's just one of the LiveJournal presets, but I'd really love to get one of Nathan and Audrey - or just of Haven in general. I think I'm going to have to request something from the community, as I've been unable to find anything on my own, and I know that my own powers with Photoshop and CSS are are practically nil. So, at some point I need to make a beg post and hope that someone feels up to the task. I know I can't be the only one in the fandom who wants a custom Haven layout.

So eleven episodes into season 2 of Haven and all I know for sure is that "Holy crap, I love this series." Check any post that has "Haven" as a tag and read the gushing praise for the show. SERIOUSLY.
Anyway, I'm working on chapter six of "Boxes in the Attic," trying to flesh out the character of the Chief through Nathan's memories, which is taking the story down some interesting paths. Primarily chapter six is really starting to show the Chief as someone who could be shaken and rattled, especially if Nathan was involved. The fun part was determining just how competent the Chief was in the kitchen. I already had it in my head that he was good a grilling, but I wondered if he was a chef at all, or if the best he could do was sticking things into the microwave. I placed him somewhere in the middle - there are a few dishes that he's good a preparing, but anything that could be defined as "complex" usually resulted in setting off the smoke alarm. It's been pretty fun to imagine what the Chief was like when Nathan was a kid, as well as give life to his yet to be characterized mother.
I also have this insane urge to do a sketch of Audrey and Nathan. I suppose it would be anime-esque when all was said in done ('cause that's how my art style rolls, apparently) and they'd probably look like they came from an animated show rather than a live action one. Other insane urges include making up a fanmix. I have a ridiculously large amount of music (especially if I raid the HTPC for my husband's music) to choose from, though there are a couple of songs that stand out in particular. The first is "Into the Dark" by Melissa Etheridge, which was used in the ending sequence from "Who, What, Where, Wendigo?" and the other is "Everything You Want" by Vertical Horizon. I suppose it's less of a generic Haven fanmix and more of a Nathan/Audrey fanmix. Seriously, those two need a little musical love. Musical love I'm more than happy to provide. XD
With the season finale on Friday and still no word from SyFy on if it's been picked up for season 3 (never mind that they've already announced that Eureka has been cancelled, while Warehouse 13 and Alphas have already been renewed), I'm starting to worry that it's on the chopping block. Admittedly they seemed a bit gun shy about renewing the series last year, but I had hoped that this year would have a strong enough showing to guarantee that it would easily be renewed. It seems to average around 2 million viewers, which I would consider pretty good for a Friday night. But what has me bothered is that the ratings were consistent for the first and second seasons. While the second season saw a ratings increase, it isn't by a wide enough margin to ensure automatic renewal. They must be watching and waiting for international ratings to determine if the series will get a third season. If it doesn't it's seriously going to suck because according to Eric Balfour, there's *another* serious cliff hanger at the end of "Sins of the Fathers." Because apparently the cliff hanger at the end of "Spiral" was too tame. ::eyeroll::Actually, that's pure conjecture. Honestly, it's the best way to keep an audience hooked so they'll tune in for the season premier is to leave them wanting resolution to some big, unanswered question raised in the season finale.
In the meantime, I'll amuse myself by writing and coming up with a fanmix for Nathan and Audrey that may or may not make it to the communities. ^^;;

Brought to you by the letter "A"
May. 24th, 2011 10:09 pmLetter thoughtfully provided by
trystan830:
1) Alexis Castle - Castle: I think Alexis is the kid that everyone wants. She's mature and responsible for her age, but is still able to be a kid. Plus the relationship that she has with her father is amazing.
2) Aryun Sun - Farscape: Aryun. She's just a badass. She kicks ass and takes names, protecting her "family" with everything she has, denying her attraction to Crichton, and generally generally being a badass.
3) Aurora - Disney's Sleeping Beauty: She's probably my favorite Disney Princess. I'm not entirely sure why, it could be that I can relate to her on some levels. Also, I love her dress. And it's BLUE, damn it.
4) Ami Mizuno - Sailor Moon: Sure...she seems like the demure one, but Ami is perfectly capable of opening up a can of whoop ass on anyone who she sees as a threat to her friends. She gets so pissed off at one point she actually creates a new attack. Do not mess with the sailor senshi of Mercury.
5) Amon - Witch Hunter Robin: Let's face it, there's a lot of about him we don't know, and that's never revealed in the series. That said, they do manage to hammer home several defining character moments all while keeping his mysterious allure. (WHR fans note that part of the reason why Amon is so attractive is that his past is still very much shrouded in mystery.)

Fan meme that's making the rounds
Apr. 19th, 2011 08:29 pmBecause I haven't done any in a while. If you need to figure out my fandoms, check the interests section of my profile. :3
Give me a character from one of my fandoms and I will tell you:
* How I FEEEEEL about this character
* All the people I ship romantically with this character
* My non-romantic OTP for this character
* My unpopular opinion about this character
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
Um, yay?

Jul. 1st, 2010 09:15 amNot much to say, except that I'm a little relieved that I'm not actually filling out a meme today. :3
( Here be warnin's about fandom wank! )
In better news,
forgotten_relic is coming for a visit, so this afternoon will be spent in the guest room trying to get things cleaned up so she has a place to crash. Even though she says that she doesn't mind sleeping on the couch, there's no point in having her crash on the couch when there is a perfectly good bed she can sleep in. She's also here if she wants to join
travellyr's BPAL party. I'm attending, of course, with computer in tow as I have my Excel spread sheet with my list of wants on it.
Further more, I've got an idea for a Mercy Thompson fanfic. Now whether or not I actually write it will come down to interest. If enough people are interested I'll write it and post it, otherwise I'll just push it from my brain and move on to other things.
Anyway, I should probably get going. Since I'm up and showered, I really have no reason not to get started on the things I need to do today.

Sunday Morning Meme
Apr. 25th, 2010 11:23 amShamelessly taken from
bandnerd88.
Pick 20 movies/anime/video games/literary works and put their summaries from Better Than It Sounds and WITHOUT CHEATING have your friends guess.
( There were a couple of my fandoms that weren't included - because Better Than it Sounds didn't have them. Because THEY SUCK. )
Seriously, if you're ever bored, look up the "Better than it sounds" description for a laugh, even if you aren't intending on doing the meme.
IRL, my husband went fishing on Friday and is getting back sometime today. That left me to do the grocery shopping, cleaning and planting of flowers. Which was fine. Last night I hung out with
sideshow_ericka and her housemate Krysti. We talked anime and cosplay (because even though I joined the Facebook group about how I like anime but I'm not a retard about it, I can act like a retard about it occasionally and not ALL THE FUCKING TIME) before settling down with the little bit and watching Sherlock Holmes. Which was played fantastically gay. X3
( I like anime, but I'm not a retard about it. )
And speaking of work - tomorrow may or may not be my last day. The person I've been filling in for is talking to her doctor tomorrow to see if she has permission to return to work. If so, she'll be back Tuesday, if no, I'll be filling in for the rest of the week at the very least, and maybe into next week as well. I'm being taken to lunch by a couple of coworkers to say thanks for filling in on such short notice tomorrow regardless of the outcome. Which leaves me to wonder, "Where do I want to go to eat?" I've been told that we can go anywhere I want...
