So my original idea for NaNoWriMo was a humorous, semi-autobiographical foray in to what it's like to be a girl in the various sci-fi and video game fandoms. It would be loosely based on the adventures of me and my friends in fandom and basically tossing the notion that all fans of sci-fi, anime and video games are slovenly, overweight white people who live in their mother's basement. Part of this stemmed from a lot of the criticisms against Team Unicorn FTW's "G33K & G4M3R GURL5" - mostly that no true geek looks like the member of Team Unicorn and obviously they aren't "real" geeks nor a real representation of the female geek and gaming community.

Well, it is a valid point that not all female geeks and gamers look like the members of Team Unicorn, but it's also a valid point that most female geek and gamers aren't overweight with skin conditions and no social life. I would say that most of us (myself included) fall into the "average" category. And like it or not, to claim that no true geek and gamer girl can look like anyone from Team Unicorn is insulting for all women in fandom. We come in all shapes and sizes, and for anyone to say otherwise is ignorant.

Anyway, what was supposed to be a light-hearted romp through high school while trying to keep fandoms a secret so as not to be a target of bullying, my novel had taken a decidedly darker turn. We now have, aside from the bullying angle I was already going to use, teen pregnancy, rape, suicide, and mental illness.

Did I mention that my novel was originally a comic effort?

Oh well. Nothing I can do about it now. The story has reached the point where it more or less writing itself down, with me making notes of important names and events as they get mentioned. A lack of continuity is a major pet peeve for me (which makes my love of Haven hilarious, given that continuity isn't exactly one of the series's strong points), and I hate to think that I opened up a monster truck sized plot hole because I can't keep names/dates/major events straight.

(And just a heads up, my current word count is 6,513/50,000, which means I still have roughly 100 more words to write today to reach today's "par" word count, and another 1,700 to reach the roughly 2,000 words I like to reach per day.)

I felt Shigure, author of cheap porn novels, was an appropriate icon for this post. XD

From [livejournal.com profile] dqbunny:

Ask me a question about one of my fanfics. It can be absolutely anything in any fic and I will tell you the honest-to-god answer. Don’t hold back. Whatever you ask, I'll answer truthfully. You can also ask about my writing as a whole, if you like.

My fanfiction.net profile has all of my fics that are published, completed are not. Feel free to browse and ask if something strikes your fancy.

So my brother graduated from college today. Only took him seven years, but he did it. His university only gave each graduate four tickets to the event, which meant that I couldn't go down to see him. However, his university was smart enough to broadcast the ceremony live via the internet, so I sat on my couch and sewed the tassel trim on to the caps of my Steampunk costume and watched it on my laptop. I wanted to watch it on the HTPC, but that would have required kicking my husband off of his computer, something he clearly did not want to do. So even though I wasn't sitting in the arena to watch him get his diploma, I got to watch it live online and in real time celebrate with him. I'm sure he's out partying with the family tonight, which hopefully means that my parents are getting along for a change.

Anyway, I think the coolest part of the night was watching an 87 year old World War II vet get his PhD in history. Yes, you read that right. He was a freshman in college when the war broke, and he put his education on hold to join up. After the war he finished his bachelors, got married, and had kids. After his retirement, he decided to further his education, enrolling in a Masters course, ultimately leading him to start for a PhD at age 80. 80 and he started the process of getting a PhD. Seven years later, he got it.

It was awesome. I will admit I got a little misty eyed as the president of Florida International detailed his story. Further more, his wife and three daughters were there to watch this. It was a pretty cool thing to witness.

Anyway, aside from sitting and sewing tassel trim, I've also been researching engagement rings for my latest Haven fic. I had [livejournal.com profile] teamspyder look at them with me in order to get a man's perspective, but also because I really needed a second opinion. You'll read all about the ring in the second chapter of "Boxes in the Attic," but if you're super curious, you can see the inspiration here. Stupid pretty, am I right? I had about four rings the choose from, the main criteria being that it had to look like an heirloom piece. But ultimately this one won out, and will be described, sort of, in the story.

And now back to the writing because I'm feeling inspired.

Today was a good exercise day, and by good I mean that I actually wend down the the gym and lifted weights and tried to up the weight in a few areas without hurting myself. So far so good. I can feel certain muscle groups starting to tighten up, and while it might be a few more weeks before the flab starts officially going the way of the dodo, I know that I'm starting to make a difference.

Saint Patrick's Day was pretty easy going. I spent the bulk of the afternoon and evening cooking. I also watched The Quiet Man. I find it amazing that even though I've seen the movie multiple times, I still find something new in it. I was planning on watching The Boondock Saints after dinner with my husband, but a slight miscalculation with dinner made that a no-go. However we watched two episodes of Burn Notice with dinner and tipped our hats to Fi. There's now half of a corned beef brisket in the fridge that will be chopped up with potatoes and turned into homemade corned beef hash on Saturday.

Prep for SakuraCon is nearly complete. This weekend my husband and I are going to get the oil changed in my car, as well as put air in the tires and vacuum the interior. I'm also going to make sure that my copy of The Bad Girl's Guide to the Open Road also makes it into the glove box, as interesting reading material for the drive may stave off boredom (playlist ideas, road games, best uses for condoms!). I'm also going to be washing my car here in a few days because it's "EW GROSS." I haven't washed it since I bought it, and I bought it in late October. So yes, we're talking about five months worth of dirt on my car. However, a wash and wax is in the immediate future so my poor little car won't look so pathetic. I also should look into putting the window cling on as well. I'm heading to Seattle - I should put as much WSU crap on my car as I possibly can. (I already have the license plate cover.)

Short of packing my suitcase, I'm ready to go to Seattle. I even managed to get the printer working so I've even printed off my pre-registration form. All that's really left to determine is where we're meeting up with the people we're caravaning with.

Dinner tonight is a pretty low-key affair. I'm making white chicken chili in the slow cooker. I'm wondering if it will thicken up any, because right now it resembles soup. If it retains its soup-like consistency, I may just make some rice and serve it over rice, ala Red Beans and Rice (except these are white beans and chicken). Either way, it'll be pretty damn good.

On the writing front, I'm gearing up for Script Frenzy. I need to learn my way around Celtx, but I have about two weeks to do that. I'm also working on Fire Emblem fic, using the infamous 100 Themes. What the hell - I do some of my best work with prompts. Also, it keeps me writing and most of them are one shots. WOO!

Annnnnnnnnnd, that's about it.

Two lovely ladies, [livejournal.com profile] irksnapple and [livejournal.com profile] chaosblue did a very lovely interview regarding their trilogy novel The Peacock King, which gave me a great world view on leading men:

[livejournal.com profile] chaosblue : I *love* it when the Judge catches it in the teeth, but I have a long history with loving to watch male leads get their asses handed to them. Chiba Mamoru, I’m lookin’ at you!

Because Tuxedo Kamen is a tool and is brainwashed at least once per season.  ^^  Though I have to wonder how many people actually got that reference.  At any rate, I do believe that quote makes Char one of the coolest people on the planet.
