For those of you who might be wondering what I'm wearing today, I think my friend [livejournal.com profile] forgotten_relic has captured it best:

The under bust is real. Steel boning and a steel busk. If cinched super tight, I wouldn't have been able to breathe. )

The last one is so you can see my awesome boots. XD

That, ladies and gents, is what I spent the whole of September fighting with. But it was worth it. So very worth it.

So. For those of you who don't follow me on Twitter, here are the photos of my completed Steampunk costume:

The Side

Huzzah, I'm done. I still need order my shoes, which is probably what I'm doing tomorrow.

So my brother graduated from college today. Only took him seven years, but he did it. His university only gave each graduate four tickets to the event, which meant that I couldn't go down to see him. However, his university was smart enough to broadcast the ceremony live via the internet, so I sat on my couch and sewed the tassel trim on to the caps of my Steampunk costume and watched it on my laptop. I wanted to watch it on the HTPC, but that would have required kicking my husband off of his computer, something he clearly did not want to do. So even though I wasn't sitting in the arena to watch him get his diploma, I got to watch it live online and in real time celebrate with him. I'm sure he's out partying with the family tonight, which hopefully means that my parents are getting along for a change.

Anyway, I think the coolest part of the night was watching an 87 year old World War II vet get his PhD in history. Yes, you read that right. He was a freshman in college when the war broke, and he put his education on hold to join up. After the war he finished his bachelors, got married, and had kids. After his retirement, he decided to further his education, enrolling in a Masters course, ultimately leading him to start for a PhD at age 80. 80 and he started the process of getting a PhD. Seven years later, he got it.

It was awesome. I will admit I got a little misty eyed as the president of Florida International detailed his story. Further more, his wife and three daughters were there to watch this. It was a pretty cool thing to witness.

Anyway, aside from sitting and sewing tassel trim, I've also been researching engagement rings for my latest Haven fic. I had [livejournal.com profile] teamspyder look at them with me in order to get a man's perspective, but also because I really needed a second opinion. You'll read all about the ring in the second chapter of "Boxes in the Attic," but if you're super curious, you can see the inspiration here. Stupid pretty, am I right? I had about four rings the choose from, the main criteria being that it had to look like an heirloom piece. But ultimately this one won out, and will be described, sort of, in the story.

And now back to the writing because I'm feeling inspired.

Since I'm going to sit down in earnest today and start sewing like a mad woman, background noise is a must. With only the lining and interfacing sewn together, I still have quite a bit of work to do. Since it's been a while since I've watched Fruits Basket, I'm going to put that in while I work. It makes for great background noise, and since I've seen it enough times that I don't need to actually watch it. Other than sewing, I really only need to poke at the dishes, make the beds (both master and guest bedrooms), and run to the bank since I got paid yesterday.

I think I'm going to finally order my shoes today, but I'm debating if I get the sevens or the eights. I suppose with the eights I can wear socks over my tights to pad around my feet or easily put inserts in that won't crowd my feet...I think the eights win. I could theoretically wear the sevens - my Doc Martens are sevens and they are by far the most comfortable shoes I own. At any rate, I'm planning on ordering my shoes from Clockwork Couture, since they have by far the most reasonable price on the shoes I want and since they're based of out California, the shipping isn't atrocious. What I'm looking forward to is telling my husband that I put another $50-$60 on the credit card. XD No doubt he'll just sigh and roll his eyes.

Anyway, I should get going. Steamcon is in mid October, but in mid-October I hope to be mostly done with the dress I'll be making for my husband's company Christmas party - though part of me kind of wants to do it off the rack this year. And while I do have a whole two months to get this dress sewn, I'd prefer to get it done sooner rather than later, as I am horrible about procrastinating.

So I bought the fabric for my new Steampunk costume last week. Over one-hundred dollars later (and saving seventy-five), I'm more or less ready to start cutting. I will, however, still have to dye the muslin. Which may become a rather creative process in my bath tub at some point this week. I do know that I have to wash the fabric first, and while it's still damp start the dying process. I'll probably run to Big Lots for a cheap, medium sized garbage can to do the actual dying in, while wearing really ratty jeans and my painting tee shirt. At least it's only four yards of muslin and not seven. I don't even want to think about what it would take to dye seven yards of muslin. @_@

Anyway, Jo-Ann's was having their Firefly Sale so I picked up all of the notions for the project. I'm set to start cutting fabric out once the muslin is dyed and dried. And there is A LOT of fabric. I already figured that it was going to be A LOT, but cripes! I think I only made things worse by opting for the bigger bustle which required far more fabric than the smaller one. FAR MORE. But Sophia has a very specific look and she requires the bigger bustle. At least it's just fabric and not caging or boning - which would make sitting damn near impossible.

I still need goggles and shoes, though. Thankfully the local Ren Faire is next weekend (so is Cool Desert Nights) has a vendor that sells Steampunk goggles - or at least they did last year and I'm hoping for him to return this year. As to the shoes, I'll just be ordering them off of Clockwork Couture, as that's the best price I've found them for online. I'm also debating a parasol. Sophia is the kind of girl who would carry both a parasol and a fan (hey, she's fresh from society - it's only natural) and I'm thinking that a black lace parasol would be perfect for her...which is also something that I could get at the Ren Faire.

Who knew that Ren Faires were a treasure trove of Steampunk items?

Anyway, once I start sewing I'll show everyone the progress. :3 I'll probably post regular update photos, which is now easy thanks to my dress maker's dummy.

So I had a nice chat with the teacher (almost an hour long!), figuring out how I would work in the classroom and what my responsibilities would be, and we both agreed that it was something that looked good on my resume and school applications if and when I get back to doing graduate school. So I'm waiting now to hear if I would be an acceptable addition to the school.

In the meantime, I'm working on my steampunk character's back stories - making them imperfect in their own special ways and not MacGuyver - and, oh yes! I updated devART!

Pictures behind teh cut! )

So that about sums it up around here.  Photos from my trip to Florida but not in the, "Oh gee look!  We're in the Everglades and look at the alligator!"  Because as some of you remember, the trip into the Everglades did not go well for me.

My second interview at the Montessori school is today - at 12:30.  I'm nervous because me getting a job there really depends on if the teacher likes me or not.

Damn it, I should NOT be so nervous.

In other news, must try to steer my steampunk characters away from Mary Sue-ville, but not quite sure how...
