[Poll #1606879]

So a friend of mine is seriously considering getting an eReader. She's considering it for a number of reasons, i.e. not enough space for actual books, she wants to use it for text books if she goes back to college, etc. When she brought this up around a couple of friends, they immediately jumped on her to buy a Kindle. Not that I don't appreciate their feedback, but let's just say that I'm more than a little wary about their glowing endorsements because they just so happen to work for Amazon. Just like I would be wary about a Barnes and Noble employee pushing the virtues of the Nook or an Apple Store employee pushing the virtues of an iPad.

Needless to say, the two of us have been online most of the morning, chatting and doing research about the various eReaders on the market. So far the debate is really between the Kindle and the Nook. Both have some great features, and both have some draw backs. What I think it will really come down to is that choosing an eReader is based on what features you want vs. what someone in the store tells you that you need.

With her criteria in mind, my friend and I have been discussing what features are an absolute must(availability of collegiate text books) and which ones should she could go without (uber-long battery life). This is not a purchase that is being made lightly, and at the moment we encourage input from everyone. Even those that work for Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Apple. Just please keep in mind something as mind-numbing as, "It's better than Brand X...why? Just because it is," will not be acceptable. It will induce eye rolling and faceplams.

O hai. Iz bak frum vacayshun. It wuz noice.

Wow that gets old fast.

Anyway, now that I'm back and more or less into the swing of things, it's time to get down to business. I have three episodes of Gilmore Girls to watch for [livejournal.com profile] backtodragonfly, and since I've proved it impossible for me to just sit and watch anything I'll probably start cutting out the pattern pieces for my Sheena costume. I also have to put on the Bombshell bra and measure my bust to make sure I get the top to be the right size. (But more on the bra and it's effects later.) I might also have Word open so I can jot down thoughts on the episodes as they come to me. I was a little behind last week, as the discussions are on Wednesday and that was the day I was driving through Glacier. I kind of missed the original discussion post, replying too late to really be part of it.

Yesterday the hubby and I did some incidental shopping, picking up odds and ends that we need, such as hangers (to accommodate my ever growing collection of nice, button down shirts, skirts and various sewing projects), face wash, a lingerie bag for the wash and a few things for the bathroom. Before I had a chance to bring it up with him, my husband noticed that the shower curtain was getting a little grody and that it was time to get a new one. I also lobbied for a bath mat, as I have some very nice body washes that have a habit of making the bathtub slick. So if I use my nice stuff and then my husband goes to take a shower, he nearly falls on his ass. The best part of this bathmat is that I can toss it in the washing machine with bleach when it starts getting gross. :3 Bonus points for easy care! The shower curtain is in various shades of green, which match the towels and coordinate with the area rugs, and the Van Gough prints on the walls. (We have Van Gough prints in the bathroom. Feel free to make a joke. I've done it dozens of times.)

Girl Talk TMI, just so you know. )

Anyway, I think I need to get a few odds and ends put away and the apartment put back in order. It was cleaned quite thoroughly before I left, but unpacking has a lovely tendency to completely destroy whatever semblance of clean that I managed to achieve before we left. It's not completely toast, but it's still messier than when I left.

*le sigh* Back to work, I guess.

Now where the fuck did I put the cellphone charger...

Yesterday I went with Maria to take her kitten to the vet in Zillah so that he could be neutered. Since we couldn't get the cat until four and his appointment was at eight, we were left with eight hours to fill. We drove the extra hour to Ellensburg for some shopping since Maria has never been to E-burg, and since I kinda knew where I was going, we took my car (and the GPS, just in case).

There's a store in Ellensburg that specializes in fashions from India, Bali and Thailand, I believe. The last time I was in the store, I ended up buying a dress. The Indian silk dress, if you remember. This time I bought a scarf that matches what I affectionately call my Bollywood skirt (same colors and dye pattern, believe it or not) and a skirt that can be worn 15 ways (as a skirt, a shirt, and a dress). I can't go in there without buying something, apparently. X3

Since it takes all of two hours to more or less see everything there is to see in downtown Ellensburg, we headed down the Yakima Canyon, then back to Yakima/Union Gap to spend half an hour at the Valley Mall before heading back to Zillah to pick up Raja, who was stoned out of skull on the trip home and slept, which works for me because it meant he wasn't being sick in my car.

On the whole, the trip was fun, if not a little exhausting. Today I need to give my car a once over to see if there were any problems that cropped up during the trip (tire pressure comes to mind) as well as finally run to the fabric store to, well, buy fabric and a few other odds and ends. The big thing is looking for fabric for my Halloween costume (Sheena from Tales of Symphonia) and a few other odds and ends for costumes and future projects. Like going through the bridal/special occasion dresses to get some ideas for my cousin's fiancee - granted I'm actually making her dress. (I still haven't heard anything about that, and it's starting to tick me off ever so slightly. Wedding dresses require time, which admittedly I have in spades at the moment, but I'm a perfectionist so I'd like as much time as possible to made the damn thing if that's the case.)

...I should probably start my laundry. My hamper has reached the point where it's about to asplode unless I do something.

It suddenly decided to be summer in the TC. I'm fairly sure, with today being a Hanford Friday Off, most of the population will either be in movie theaters or out on the river. I plan on hiding in the apartment with the AC on. After all, I still need to watch Main Hoon Na and cut out fabric for skirts ('cuz, you know, I've been saying that I'm going to cut out the fabric for a couple of weeks now) so I might as well get them taken care of, together.

I was debating going out shopping, but pretty much anywhere I go will be packed (i.e. the mall) save a couple of places, like the grocery store or the fabric store. I'd rather not mess around with the crowds, because, let's face it, people tend to be really irritating when they're hot (myself included).

I suppose all that's really left is a little bit of cleaning. Making the bed, getting the last of last night's dinner dishes washed and put away, and making sure that I did in fact dust EVERYTHING yesterday. Which reminds me...yesterday I spent getting things cleaned up around the apartment - dusting and vacuuming because those I only do when I remember that it really should be done - and that's a good thing since I may be watching my husband's cousin's daughter for a couple of hours next week. I'd rather things were cleaned up around here instead of messy. Admittedly, she's ten so I don't think she'd mind the mess, but I really feel better about things being clean. At any rate, the house was due for a good cleaning so I might as well get it done while I'm motivated to do it.

I suppose I should finish what's left to be done. The dishes won't do themselves and the bed still needs to be made.

This is a favorite tag of [livejournal.com profile] travellyr. Mostly because she ends up doing tech support for her parents, and for a while, doing minor tech support for a major online retailer who happens to have a call center in town. Anyway, I have a few friends who work at said major online retailer in various departments.

You know that blog, "(The Customer is) Not Always Right?" Yeah, the story of their lives.

I recently ordered a couple of books from Barnes and Noble online because I get the 15% off coupons sent straight to my inbox (which I freakin' love). And right now Barnes and Noble has a deal that if you buy $10 worth of product, you get free three day shipping. Woo! I ordered the latest volume of Kaze Hikaru because it's hit or miss if the local B&N carries it. And because I find it's easier to use the special discount coupons online rather than farting around with printing the damn thing off to take into the store.

At any rate, I ordered the volume and found that it was less than ten bucks, so I asked my friend [livejournal.com profile] forgotten_relic what else I should buy. Even though her suggestion of a bookmark was good, I find that I rarely use them. And I already have several. I then said that I was looking for a book with tips to improve my drawing skills, so she suggested a title that I added to my cart. She got her degree in art, if she suggests a book on drawing, I'm going to trust her.

I placed my order Saturday night, and yesterday my order was officially packed and ready to ship. From Philadelphia. Guess what's going on in Philadelphia right now?

Thankfully, I'm not one of those 'tards from "Not Always Right" who's going to call B&N customer service bitching because I got the 3 day shipping and "GOD DAMN IT WHY ISN'T IT HERE YET?!" I'm fully aware that weather conditions are less than optimal for shipping of any kind. However, the fact that there are people who do in fact call up customer service centers to complain about their packages being late for reasons beyond the company's control annoy the hell out of me.

"I'm very sorry you feel that way, but there's nothing I can do. Do you really expect me to stop the snow?"

"YES!"

"...I can't do that."

"Sure you can, just get on to your computer and fix this!"

And yes, there really are conversations like this. Which is both hilarious (because people really are that stupid) and sad (because some poor customer service rep is currently banging their head against their desk as they listen to that shmuck rail on and on about how this is poor customer service).

Well, I have stuff to do today. The big project is getting the buttons sewn onto my MLP jacket and then sewing on the snaps.

And then finding time to do yoga and then go walk two miles.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of new car to buy. I'm looking at three different cars - the Honda Fit, Honda Civic, and the Toyota Corolla. To get a better idea of what else is out there, I was also looking at the Ford Focus, but out of all of those car, the Focus doesn't have a lot of room, so that one got nixed pretty quick. The other three are more fuel efficient, have more room, and good reliability. Which is something I need.

The car I'm currently driving is a 1995 Thunderbird.  I've wanted a T-Bird for years, mostly because, let's be perfectly honest, I am a Beach Boys fan and "Fun Fun Fun" is one of my absolute favorite songs by them.  So me being able to cruise around town in my very own T-Bird, well, it's every girl's dream, right?  At least I didn't have to worry about daddy taking it away from me though.  It was *my* car.

I'm looking for something that gets good fuel economy, has good space (but isn't a land yacht), and doesn't cost an arm and a leg and my first born child.  Yes, I'm basically looking for an Econo-box, but I don't need a huge car.  And while it has been fun driving a V8 (my T-Bird has a 4.5L V8 under the hood), I'll be happy enough with a smaller engine.  Means I have to stop off at the gas station less frequently.  I want something I can road-trip in, something I can haul around my friends and small children in, and if I buy new, something that I can drive for ten to fifteen years before it craps out on me.  (Sadly, the main reason why I have to get a new car is because my T-Bird's transmission is dying.  D: )

There is the possibility that my husband will buy a mid-size truck for himself and give me his car, but I like the idea of getting a brand new car that is JUST MINE.  All of the vehicles I've ever owned were pre-owned and with the exception of my poor totaled Taurus, were in half-ass condidtion.  So that's probably why the idea of a sparkly new car is exciting to me.

I like shoes.  Correction.  I love shoes.  Seriously.  I could be one of those women who could have an entire closet devoted to just SHOES.

That said, that cute sundress that I bought on Saturday is asking for new shoes.  Now, the cute sandals that Trav got on Saturday would actually look cute, but I don't know why but I'm having a hang up about having the same shoes as Trav.  I think that whole being dressed identically as a child has come back to affect my adult life in a very strange way.  >_o  At any rate, I do have a pair of brown (light brown sugar brown) Italian leather wedge heels that I can wear with this dress that will do in a pinch, but until then I'm hunting for a pair of shoes that will match this dress.

This is, of course, something that my husband will NEVER understand.  As it stands, he couldn't understand why I had to buy shoes specifically for my Care Bear and Steampunk cosplays.  ^^;;  However those are a pair of yellow Mary Jane ballet flats and Dr. Marten boots that match my costumes perfectly, and therefore were necessary.  Despite what he might say.  (Though he was the one who bought the Dr. Martens when I said that I didn't need them but I really wanted them....)

The biggest problem is finding a pair of shoes in an appropriate style to match this dress, as well as in coordinating colors.  Neutral tones are good for this dress, so that the teal is the sole source of color.

On a surprising side note, I have a pair of earrings with stones that are the exact same teal color read to go as the jewelry choice.  I suppose I could find some bangles to wear as well, but aside from that, I don't think jewelry is necessary.

[livejournal.com profile] travellyr graduated from Central Washington University yesterday, which meant we all went up to Ellensburg yesterday to watch her walk across the stage and receive her diploma. Other people who went up included her parents and brother, aunt, uncle, adopted parents (as in the parents of friends who have known Trav since high school), and a whole gaggle of friends, including [livejournal.com profile] desertkitsune , [livejournal.com profile] irksnapple , [profile] forgotten_relic , [livejournal.com profile] chaosblue , Ericka, Sabrina and myself. After we all went to lunch at a local Mexican restaurant, which is one of the few places in town that can fit 20+ people in one room at one time at one table. Lunch was on Trav's Dad, and after that the parents and other relatives left while us girls hung around Ellensburg until the Bar Noir started at nine. This included a run to Fred Meyer where we poked around and bought some stuff (I got a new bra and some sun glasses) before heading downtown to poke around the shops there.

So after a quick stop in at a piercing and tattoo parlor (where they had some really awesome clothes and jewelry), we stopped into a shop that specializes in imports. We affectionately called it the Import Store - most of their stuff comes from India and Africa. I was poking around the sale rack looking at tops and skirts before I wandered in and found a cute sundress. I wasn't sure if I was going to get it, but I didn't see the harm in trying it on - it's a very pretty cerulean blue, teal like color with a very interesting pattern in neutral tones. I came out of the dressing room looking a little nervous. I'm a little chubby and the dress doesn't exactly hide it well (well, it doesn't hide it at ALL). However there was no denying that my coloring works well with the color of the dress. I looked good which is surprising. So I made a $45 impulse buy yesterday (that's including tax), on a hand made silk dress from India. Now I have to find matching shoes.

Trav the grad bought some Henna, which Irk and Ericka used to create art on her back and legs. Of course, she also fell asleep with Kleenex shoved up her nose so she was making cute little snorting and snoring noise through out Kill Bill vol. 2. We also had the great BPAL (Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab) sniff-a-thon, where vials of perfume were passed around, tried on, and monitored to see how they aged and how our own body chemistry affected the scents. After Thai food, we all went out to Bar Noir, a faux bar in the back of a local art gallery where they show weird B movies and serve drinks and snacks while everyone sort of watches the movies, listens to music, and chat.  I was with Ericka and Sabrina so we couldn't hang around for too long because both had church today and we wanted to get home with enough time to get some sleep.

I got home at one, got to bed at one-thirty, and then was woken up at nine because my husband didn't know when I came in (he was fast asleep and there was no waking him), so he woke me up so I wouldn't get enough sleep.

Too bad I didn't get enough sleep ANYWAY.  So now I'm half asleep, not wanting to cook or do anything of importance (hey, I cleaned the damn bathroom and the bedroom today) and facing the prospect of actually having to cook even though all I want to do is sleep.
