Day 30 - Saddest character death?

Nuriko from Fushigi Yuugi. Seriously. It was a pointless death, too. He probably would have lived until Mitsukake got to the shrine had he not been stupid enough to believe that he HAD to move the boulder blocking the door before everyone else arrived. Fridge Logic dictates that he probably had fatal wounds, but could have lasted long enough for the team healer to arrive and save him. But nooooooooo. He had to move that stupid boulder BEFORE everyone else got there, leading to massive blood loss which is something Mitsukake CAN'T heal.

This was made even sadder, as Nurkio had really reached a high point in character development, where he was ready to let go of his past and move forward with his life.

I think his death is really only rivaled by Wolfwood's dead in Trigun.

Wow, all thirty days are done. Expect an actual blog tomorrow about actual stuff. :3

Tasha Yar, StarTrek TNG.

Another pointless death, from a character perspective. The actress didn't want to get 'typecast'. Leaving STTNG turned out to be a bad career move...

Ah yes, same thing that happened to Nathan Stark on Eureka. His death was kind of pointless, but the actor wanted to leave. So instead of say, getting transferred to another facility they just kill him off. Of course, this being Eureka, his death is anything but normal but as far as characterization goes, I think it kind of killed the momentum of the season.

Moving on, the interesting part about Nurkio's death was that he was a fan favorite (he's a cross dressing gay so yes, he has TONS of fangirls) and the author wasn't even planning to kill him off...until she got to that part of the story and apparently as she wrote it she was sobbing. I guess she did try to re-write it so that he survived, but apparently that messed up the flow of the story so he stayed dead.

Wolfwood was again a victim of the story marching forward when his death could have ALSO been avoided (moreso in the manga than the anime adaption), but I guess the plot demanded a sacrifice.

Why is it, that when the plot demands a sacrifice, they always kill off the favorite character?
