I finished Heat Wave around 11:30 last night. I gave a content sigh and then started reflecting back on the book itself, and figured I should talk a little bit about what I thought of it.

First off, this book is for fans of Castle. Anyone who isn't a fan probably won't like this book. The endorsements on the front and back covers from James Patterson and Stephen J. Cannell are keeping with the series - both authors play poker with Castle and sit around discussing their latest books while drinking. Let me repeat - part of the show and in keeping the book in the spirit of the show, the authors "endorse" the book. It's supposed to be a funny in-joke for Castle fans.

The book itself reads like an extended episode of Castle and borrows elements from the entire first season. If you watched the first season, you'll catch the references easily - mostly from guest characters and even tributes to the work that the guest actors have done. (There's a loving send-up to Dan Castellaneta and his most famous job to date, Homer Simpson.) This keeps with the spirit of the show, in which Castle follows around Beckett and works with the 12th Precinct to get inspiration from his book. Subtle differences keep it from being exactly like the show.

As to how the book's tone goes, it sometimes feels like glorified fanfiction. Of course, we have no idea who's actually writing the book - the show's writers, a creator, or Nathan Fillion himself (which would be all kinds of cool, because let's face it, he's Nathan Fillion) - so there is that possibility that is could be fanfiction.  But I have to admit, certain parts of the book made me excited about the series.

For those who are curious, yes, the sex scene does start on page 105.  And it ends on page 106, about a third of the way down the page.  But if you want to get technical, the foreplay starts on page 97 (or really technical, at the beginning of the book).  Not nearly as steamy as the make it out to be in episode 2.04, "Fool Me Once" but still worth of the read.  And I like that it's Castle and Beckett without it being Castle and Beckett.  As I said before, it does make me kind of excited to see where the series goes, especially in regards to their relationship.

All in all, if you're a fan of Castle, you'll like Heat Wave.  Whether or not you decide to love it is complete up to you.
