In all of the small ways
Aug. 27th, 2010 02:29 pmSo remember when I last posted? Right. Still working on that.
Trav emailed the group the details with the event on Saturday. A local four year old girl with leukemia made a wish to participate in the Mad Hatter's tea party. The original plan was that the party was supposed to be in three weeks time, giving everyone (hospital staff and volunteers) enough time to get costumes, food, decorations, etc., in order. However the news went out that the girl's chemo was no longer working and that they were stopping treatment - and the party had to happen this Saturday, or it wouldn't happen at all.
At this point most of the original planning was scrapped, and everyone who had initially volunteered made frantic phone calls to get as many people as they could to help with the preparations and execution of the Mad Tea Party in three days notice. Trav, working for the neurology department of the hospital, had cheerfully signed up to help with the party, and when the time crunch went into effect, she started making calls to the group.
Remember two years ago when my friends held the Un-Birthday Party, complete with Alice in Wonderland themed Mad Tea Party?
Yup. An entire corps of adults with Alice inspired costumes.
Child sized costumes were donated by the local children's theater troupe (who did a performance a few years back), but they were sorely lacking adult costumes. So the cry went out, "If you have an Alice in Wonderland costume in an adult size, can we borrow it or could you come to the party?" With the exception of a few friends who have to work that Saturday, most of us are attending the party. We're also helping set-up, decorate, work stations and then strike the party.
Since The Duchess has been sitting the closet since the party without any reason to wear her, I've pulled her out in anticipation. I've also made a new blouse, as the Old Navy tunic I was using just wasn't working as well with the whole look as I would have hoped. Since I found out about this on Wednesday, I spent all of yesterday sewing, and a good part of this morning as well. Now that the blouse is complete, the whole look of The Duchess is much better and quite ready for the party tomorrow.
Also for the party I made little brownie bites. Years ago I got a mini-muffin pan which is great for making itty-bitty cupcakes or the brownie bites. They've been dusted with powdered sugar, and now all I need is a pretty serving platter, as the foil and plastic trays they're in right now aren't all that attractive, nor do they mesh well with the whole Mad Tea Party Theme.
During the party I volunteered to run the face painting table. When I worked for a large grocery chain that was gung-ho for breast cancer research and education fund-raising, I donated a couple of afternoons to painting kids. I wish I could say that I painted their faces, but I ended up painting a few arms and legs, too. And a few years before that I ran the face painting table at my younger sister's elementary school carnival.
For a while there I wasn't sure that I was going to have enough time to get everything done that I wanted, but thankfully I managed my time (and sewed like a fiend) and aside from getting my groggy behind to the park tomorrow morning at 8 to help with setup, everything is smooth sailing. I'm waiting for a friend to call, as I'm supposed to be picking up her donations (a hat, some baked goods, and a wig for Relic who is attending as the White Queen) and the donations of another friend who can't make it (baked goods, to my knowledge). I suppose I should go make an effort to beautify myself to an extent. I don't think The Duchess should have a unibrow.

(But in that case, my mother who was on the PTA volunteered me and I had no idea that I was doing it until she told me so that I could get the time off from work. Go figure.)
