Dear F-list,

There is a mushroom cloud about 5 miles from where I live. Should I be worried?

Sincerely,

Mercy

Don't know where you are. It's probably some kind of industrial accident. Turn on your radio to see if there are any evacuation or shelter orders.

It may be a mushroom cloud but you know its merely a chemical explosion of some kind because your computer hasn't been EMP'd.

Turns out it's just a steam cloud...in the shape of a mushroom...from the nuclear power plant. I think it's just more pronounced right now because it's so darn cold outside. And most days it does not take on the shape of a mushroom.

That's fairly creepy and unsettling. Did you discover what it was? O_O

Steam. The nuclear power plant is always billowing steam but right now it's more pronounced because of the extreme cold.

Even though it is just steam, but it being a mushroom cloud and where it is coming from would really have me spooked. O.o

See, I was waiting for someone to make the connection to the fact that I live south east of a nuclear power plant. And normally it doesn't bother me, but this morning it was really pronounced.

I was about to turn on the news when I read that. I was worried too. Because the wind usually comes from the southwest and that is where you are at. So if you get nuked, I'll get the cloud too. DX

You've never seen that before? Maybe it's just because I live on a hill....

Yeah, it's the steam cloud from the cooling towers. It does that a LOT when it's this cold, but from my perspective it usually looks more like a fist.

Anyway, silly Mercy... if it WERE that kind of mushroom cloud you'd never even get a chance to notice, much less worry!

I've seen it up close, actually. ^^ I went out to the CGS for my environmental science class. (We actually got to take a tour of the training room, which is exactly like the real control room. We also got to see a demonstration of a worse case scenario, in which we were informed that if it did actually happen, the best we could do would to be to bend over and kiss our butts goodbye.)

I knew what it was, it just looked more mushroomy than usual. Which, coming from the direction of a nuclear power plant is NEVER a comforting sign.

Apparently my attempt at snarky nuclear humor does not go over well, even with people who live in the area. ^^;;

XD At least not with someone who's riding on two days of overtime and not enough sleep.
