I should be used to this by now

I'm fairly used to weird dreams. By all accounts they usually make sense shortly after I wake up. It's after a couple of hours that it strikes just how genuinely WEIRD they are.
So my husband and I have gotten series 5 of the new Doctor Who from Netflix and have been gleefully working our way though the episodes. Matt Smith is a adorkable, and while he is not David Tennant, he's doing a damn fine job of establishing his own idiosyncratic version of the Doctor. He even wrote fanfiction for it. (Ascended fanboy, in a sense, much like Tennant before him and of course series executive producer Steven Moffatt.)
The last episode I watched was The Time of Angels. Those of you familiar with the new Who, know o the rather infamous episode "Blink" in which Steven Moffatt successfully scared the SHIT out of everyone, adult and child, who watched it.
The cosmic horrors known as the Weeping Angels return. In the first part of a two parter. And let me tell you, I wasn't happy when I heard that the Angels were returning and I certainly wasn't happy about the episode last night. Steven Moffatt is very, VERY good at scaring you shitless. He's also very good at tugging on your heartstrings, if "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances" and "The Girl in the Fireplace" are any indication. Because I can't stand the Weeping Angels and have been having nightmares about them for the last couple of days, I decided it was time to binge on Slayers Try to try and get something funny implanted in my brain to dream about instead.
Didn't dream about the Burn Notice season finale, though, as most loose ends were tied up and I usually don't dream about that unless I'm dreaming of Miami and suddenly Bruce Cambpell walks by but it's NOT Bruce Campbell he only looks like Bruce Campbell...
So when I started dreaming I was dreaming of Slayers and the Weeping Angels.
Wait, WHUT.
Yup, apparently Zelgadiss had some sort of immunity to the Angels because he's part golem (something about stone being immune, I guess?) and Lina was attempting Dragon Slave them out of existence. I think she decided to use the Giga Slave when I woke up. And was confused as all get out.
"What the FUCK did I eat last night that would make me dream about that?!"
Anyway, post lunch will find me making phone calls on the behalf of the KNRC. My main concern is getting my cell phone to cooperate, especially since the battery is getting old and dies a lot quicker than it did when I got it. Of course I have the charger handy, but that's a royal pain to deal with. Oh well, not much I can do about it.
Anyway, FOOD!!

"Don't blink. Don't even blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast, faster than you could believe, don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink. Good luck."

Date: 2010-12-17 08:37 pm (UTC)I don't know if it's really your kind of show - it's shonen fantasy with a female protagonist. It's hilarious (or at least I find it so), but again it all comes down to a matter of personal taste.

I really need to watch more of series 5, but I haven't gotten past the second episode. A lot of it has to do with Amy. I loved her in the first episode, but the second episode nearly made me throw something at the TV. The third episode was originally written for Ten and Donna and you can tell that in a huge way. Then, having been spoiled for other episodes, I just kind of want to throw something at the TV again.
I miss Donna. :( And Rose.

Date: 2010-12-17 08:57 pm (UTC)I also had issues with the second episode of s.5 because it felt like a contrived coincidence that Amy was the one who saved the day. I really, really don't want her to turn into s.2 Rose, who was almost like a God Mode Sue who could do no wrong and was the one who was going to save the day when the Doctor fell short. I want her to mess up and make mistakes (and by make mistakes not save the world because she was ultimately right in the end). I want to see her utterly broken by something beyond her (and the Doctor's) control.
I adored Martha and Donna, though Donna would have to be my hands down favorite. I liked Rose in season one, but I felt they derailed her in season two. I'm still on the fence about Amy. She could possibly redeem herself in later episodes. We'll see

Date: 2010-12-17 09:21 pm (UTC)But, that was my problem with Amy. With Rose, Donna and Martha, you see them all not quite getting it right the first few times. As they grew as characters, they grew into the types of companions that could save the Doctor when he needed it. Martha walked the world and Donna was just... DONNA. Yet, here comes Amy and in her second episode, she not only saves the world but suddenly gets everything about the Doctor. Hell, Rose never knew he was even from Gallifrey and he loved her. It's kind of grating and makes me see Amy as more of a Donna 2.0, but I'd rather have the original. Can you imagine Eleven and Donna?
I think Rose's huge problem in series two was that the writers weren't quite sure what to do with her at times. I realize how much of series 2 I actually skip when I rewatch it - mainly I just watch "The Girl in the Fireplace" (ironically an episode which most Doctor/Rose shippers loathe, but I think it's my favorite episode in the series), "The Impossible Planet"/"The Satan Pit" and "Army of Ghosts"/"Doomsday". Sometimes "New Earth," it depends on how much Cassandra I can take. The rest of the series I can just throw out with the wash except the second half of "School Reunion."
I think Doctor Who excels in developing companions for one series, but as of yet, we haven't shown that it could be handled over two. It makes me wonder how different series two would have been with Jack. More Jack is always awesome. I'm currently watching Torchwood before they yank it from Netflix in a few days.

Date: 2010-12-17 09:57 pm (UTC)The thing about series one Rose is that she does screw up, and in a very big way. Then she learns from it and does what she can to try and make things better and be as useful as she can be - at least until series two in which case they want to make her something that I felt she wasn't. She had some good moments - I do like her talking to Madam de Pompadour in "The Girl in the Fireplace" because she's doing her damnedest to try and help a woman you can tell she doesn't particularly care for because she's captured the Doctor's attention, but she can't not help because she doesn't want to disappoint the Doctor - but for the most part it seemed like the writers, and RTD especially, were trying to make her the super companion who had no flaws and was perfect.
I feel that Steven Moffett is doing that with Amy. Perhaps she'll get better and have her huge moment of screw up where she learns that sometimes there is nothing that you can do and ultimately trying to help makes things worse. I suppose it's possible that they can make it work, but I'm skeptical at the moment. I won't get the next two discs until Monday at the absolute earliest, so it's not like I can just plug on through to see what happens next (beyond more Weeping Angels, that is).
I want to like Amy. I really do. I think she has the potential to be a fantastic companion for the Doctor but I don't feel like they've really developed the character at this point. True, I'm only four episodes in, but I'd like to think that she'll come into her own as a companion here before too much longer.
