Question!

What makes 'cosplay' different than 'dressing up in strange clothes'? (...and I say that as a Renaissance geek that dresses up in strange clothes several times a year. We just don't call it 'cosplay'.)

"Cosplay" is a portmanteau of "costume" and "play," which is characterized by dressing up as a certain character and acting like them. Cosplay is primarily found amongst anime and video game fandoms, where you dress like a character and then act like them, usually at convetions. Posing for pictures is practically mandatory, and the primary reason most people do it.

I do costume play in various forms (i.e. my wench who had made appearances at Ren Faire, the Duchess from Alice in Wonderland, Steampunk) but reserve the term "cosplay" for dealing with anime, video games and animated shows (i.e. my Care Bear, My Little Pony).

Example of costuming, but not cosplay:

My friends made their goggles with jar lids and leather straps, but you can look at this tutorial that a friend of mine found.

As my costume is that of a school marm, so I don't have goggles. I do have, however, a leather bound journal and a calligraphy pen to use as props.
