Sundays are easy going days, if by easy going you mean involves massive amounts of cleaning. X3

But today will be easy because the bathroom doesn't need to be scrubbed quite yet. But it'll probably need it tomorrow afternoon. As it stands, today will be spent cooking the noms for the Birthday Party and getting creative with wrapping. I don't think I'll be pulling out the calligraphy set this year, but decorate with markers. I have no idea what Mel and Trent are doing for theirs. (Knowing my husband, he'll wrap it whatever he can find.)

I dug out the Rock Band stuff Friday, and officially brought it out yesterday. It's currently sitting in the living room, under the TV as a reminder of "Remember this or die." I also have to remember to grab the games. Because all of that equipment is useless with out the games.

Yesterday I bought fabric for my party dress as well as some costume pleather for Athena's chest plate. I'll probably start cutting out my dress on Wednesday (minor road trip on Tuesday) and get it sewn before NaNo starts. (NaNo is another entry for another LJ.) It'll probably be after Halloween before I can truly finish Athena. At least I have the grommets and don't need to buy them. I also hit up Bath and Body Works for scented oils (Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin, Black Currant Vanilla, and Spearmint Eucalyptus.)  My place is going to smell good.  Hurrah!

Also showing my dorkitude, I bough Heat Wave by Richard Castle.  I'm as yet to officially start reading it, but I'm excited.  Part of my purchase is to show my support for Castle which is in some trouble with ABC, as the ratings aren't what the network wants them to be.  I also want to buy the first season on DVD.  I'm not one for letter writing or calling, so I'll show my support by faithfully tuning in on Monday nights, purchasing promotional materials (like Heat Wave), and getting the series on DVD.

Anyway, I think my shower is now free and I need to clean up before diving into the kitchen full bore to get food ready for the birthday party.

So. The dress for Athena is sewn. I just have to figure out how to drape the red fabric (mmm, sounds like a Google Image search is in my immediate future) and figure out how I want to do the chest plate. [profile] sideshow_ericka suggested that I cover the duct tape base in batting (a very light weight batting should do, with a thickness of no more than half an inch) and gold fabric - the batting will hide the duct tape lines under the gold fabric. Now, for the gold fabric, do I use the spandex (which comes in light gold, medium gold, and dark gold) or the tissue lame (which is just...gold, like Rocky's...shorts...from RHPS). I'm leaning towards the spandex which has a much better shine and looks less like...Rocky's shorts. Then it becomes a matter of trying to flatten out the shield and painting the spear. And I'm going to punch grommets. GROMMETS!

I'm currently working on the jacket for my My Little Pony. It's the "B" design that comes to the "v" in the back. But I might get lazy and instead of doing the buttons (which I have, but I really don't particularly feel like messing with button holes) just put the eye hooks. Or I'll McGyver something, because that's what I do. XD Once the jacket is finished (it's going to be sleeveless, so the construction is going MUCH faster than originally anticipated because of that) I still have to draw on the strawberry design all over the back of the jacket, because the pony that is my inspiration (Sugarberry) is a Twice as Fancy Pony, meaning that she's got the design all over her back and not just on her hip. So while everyone else is designing their ponies with their symbols on their hips/butts, I have to do mine ALL over my jacket. At least the back of it anyway. Maybe along the sides. Not quite sure yet. But there will be strawberries on this jacket, and a lot of them. >_o

I'm probably not going to work any more on the jacket, save maybe pressing open seams. Which really isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Probably also going to clip corners just so that everything will lay flat. I'll start back up tomorrow, while also trying to make cookies. Which I really should make tonight because I don't know if my husband has any for lunch tomorrow and heaven forbid he run out of cookies. (For those of you who have seen my husband know that he can go a few days without cookies - it won't kill him and he could stand to not eat as much junk food.)

Frick on a stick with a brick.

I'm off to make cookies. ::sigh:: He just opened up the dining room window and that means that it's cool enough that running the oven for an hour or so isn't going to make the apartment feel like the fifth level of hell. I won't have the luxury tomorrow. >.<

So, the fabric for Athena has been cut out for weeks. Probably closer to a month. ^^;;

I finally started sewing the costume on Wednesday, and the dress is almost done. It's a toga-like dress, which will be dressed up with red fabric that will make a pseudo cape. I tucked the fabric under the chest plate, had a 300 moment ("This...is...ATHENS!!") and then started fully sewing again. X3

I'm almost ready to sew the lining to the dress and then hem it, in which case then I just need to lace the cord and it'll be done. Once Athena is done, then I'm going to start up with my My Little Pony. I finally got the interfacing and the lining, so I'm going to get the jacket cut out and sewn together. And I have to pray that I still fit into my pants and look into buying some underwear that won't show under very tight, white jeans. I have to loose some weight so I can fit in my loli dress and then get some fabric for my apron. I'm thinking white muslin.

On the job front, I still haven't heard anything. My mother is going to give me a hand and ask around her business contacts and see if anyone can use me. There's also a possibility of actually using my degree in the form of the White Bluffs Interpretive Center. Since the White Bluffs National Monument is getting an official interpretive center, I'm thinking that I can actually be of some use there, especially since one of my degree requirements was a History of the Pacific Northwest class, with quite a bit of time talking about White Bluffs and the Hanford Project in general.

Well, back to the sewing.  I'm going to try and finish Athena today so I can start the MLP tomorrow.

EDIT - Truly, all hail Athena!  :3  She's done.

So I bought the spear and shield on Saturday afternoon. The shield is not the traditional circular shape, but at this point I really don't care. It's an oval shape, metal and in need of either a really good shine and buff or paint. I may change the orientation or not even HOLD it, but rather prop it up by my feet. After all, how often is Athena depicted as ACTUALLY holding her shield?

The spear has a wooden handle and a metal top that needs a little soldering. And probably a coat of paint. It's silver. I think I should make it gold. Does that historically work. (Yes, I realize as a person with a history degree I shouldn't be asking but just know, but I specialized in modern history vs ancient history.)

Now I just have to find an owl. I'm thinking that if I can find a plush of a Little Owl I should be good.  Especially since the Little Owls were sacred to Athena.  :3

Well.

My friends Ericka and Amber found me a metal shield and a spear to use for my Athena.  I still have to go and buy them, but the fact of the matter is that I DO NOT HAVE TO MAKE THEM, AND THAT MAKES ME VERY HAPPY.  :3

We also discussed helm options, which basically came down to "buy a big foam or styrofoam ball, hollow it out and use it as the base for a helm."  Which would probably be molded out of either papier-mâché or plaster which would make it light weight and molded to fit my head.  I suppose a large balloon could also be used as the base.

As for the chest plate I'm reaching the point where it will be made of gold lame or the gold shiney fabric that I found in the swimwear/dancewear section of the fabric store.  Even searching for "costume pleather" was turning up zilch.  Or the wrong color.

This is what I get for costuming at a time that is not Halloween.

At the moment it seems like this is going to moot since I won't be participating in the photoshoot since I'm having my wisdom teeth out the day before so I will be puffy, sore and higher than a kite the day of the shoot.  But I still want to do the costume because, damnit, I'm part of the group and other than the fact that I won't be participating in the photoshoot there's no reason for me NOT to do it.  I can have someone take my picutre the next weekend if necessary.

So I'm trying to come up with an Athena costume. I have a nice pattern for a Greek Goddess/Muse/Pharaoh costume which I'm going to use to make the basic tunic/dress and then modify some in order to give it some personality and flair. I'm basically aiming for this look but the main dress/tunic is to be white, and then she'll have a psudo-blouse under the chest plate, and that is a nice crimson color.

I probably won't start this until mid-May since it doesn't have to be done until June 6th. Which gives me time to sit and play with it and see what I want to do with it. Now what's bugging me is the chest plate and the helm. I've found costume helms, all made of cheap plastic and looking like they're made of cheap plastic. I could theoretically make a helm of plaster and sand it down and then paint it and put a nice finish on it, or I could order one of these cheap plastic ones and use it as a mold and make it out of clay and plaster that I would then sand down and paint and schellack the damn thing.

At any rate, it's shaping up to be very irritating and time consuming and a lot of effort into something that may not get a lot of use. The other option is that I find other uses for it - though really, how much use do I have for a Greek style helm even as a costume piece?

Grah...this is getting frustrating.

And somewhere in there I have to make my My Little Pony, Sugarberry.  She's an interpretation, which means that the bulk of the costume can be bought at Target and the only thing that I have to make is a jacket with the strawberry design on the back and some arm wraps.
