Self Actuated Residential Automated Habitat - or SARAH for short. X3

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's put this on here. SARAH does everything. EVERYTHING. But she'd need a new voice. Fargo's voice taken up a few octaves just isn't right.

Also, I should see if I can find some Eureka icons now.

Richard Castle. (Probably not the first to answer with him, but it's true.)

First of all, he's ruggedly handsome.

Secondly, he's actually very intelligent, and I think it would be interesting to pick his brain about his writing process, where he finds inspiration, what he thinks his best work is, his worst work, what his advice would be to aspiring writers, and so on. I think he'd be an excellent conversation partner. I'm pretty sure dinner conversation would never be boring.

Obviously as he is not a real person, none of this really matters. But if I could have a dinner date with Nathan Fillion I'd be ridiculously happy, and I would probably pick his brain about why he picks the projects he does, his inspirations, advice to aspiring actors, etc.

1) Yes. I've been watching the Super Bowl since I was a kid, but that mostly for the food and the commercials. Only in the last couple of years I've been actually watching the game.

2) I'm just gonna be sitting back and watching the game. My sister-in-law is coming over for a bit, and there are some snacks (pizza rolls, chips and dip). I may or may not end up chatting with [livejournal.com profile] teamspyder online, as that's become something of a tradition with us. :)

I am year of the Rat. King of the Zodiac, baby! (...no, wait...that's not right...)

As it stands most of the descriptions of any Zodiac are vague enough that if you squint enough you can fit yourself into any sign. As a general rule I see parallels between the description of a person born in the year of the Rat and myself, but I can also see those parallels with the year of the Boar and the year of the Ox as well. And I can usually find at least three traits I can associate with with all of the other signs as well.

...I should totally watch Fruits Basket today.

Honestly, it wasn't even meant as an insult, but I found the implications behind it very offensive.

A couple of years ago a friend sent me an instant message shortly after I had signed into my messenger service. He inquired into what I was doing, when I replied that I had just woken up, so I was having a cup of coffee while watching Regis and Kelly and trying to figure out what I wanted for breakfast.

He then quipped back that I was obviously being lazy. He had already attended two classes that day, and I that I really needed to get my butt in gear so that I could get to class myself. Or work. He wasn't sure which, but he automatically assumed that I probably had to deal with both.

Now, this friend and I really hadn't talked since he moved out of town a few years before this, so it wasn't like he really knew what my life was doing at this point. I can't fault him for that, but I would have assumed that he knew enough about me to realize that insinuating that I was "lazy" because I had gotten up at nine was probably a bad idea.

I then tensely replied that I had graduated with my B.A. in history the year before, and because I had been planning on going to graduate school, had quit my job. Graduate school ended up being a bust, and because I had married and married well I didn't have to work, but I was in the process of looking for a job.

Needless to say, my friend was a little taken aback, and tried to dig himself out of the hole, claiming that he hadn't figured that I had already graduated. Yes, I realize that it took me a bit longer than most people, but I worked my way through college on a little above minimum wage, and so I took as many classes as I could afford at the time. But I had finished and was in the process of looking into either graduate school or a job. (Those of you who follow my LJ know exactly what happened, and I'm not looking to share the details with the rest of the world, but long story short, things aren't going well on either side of the coin.)

I answered back that I understood that he and I hadn't talked in a while, but considering that most people our age have either dropped out completely or already graduated (unless pursuing Masters or Doctorates) it was insulting that he automatically assumed that I wasn't done with school. Just because he hadn't gotten his AA yet didn't mean that I hadn't either. I have an A.A. and a B.A., and I suppose this is what I get for figuring that my friends at least had a vague idea of what I was planning with my life.

I've been avoiding him since, not because I feel that he's some kind of loser for not even having his A.A. yet, but because I really don't need someone like him in my life. We were friends, but never especially close, so it's not like I really miss his presence. I chalk it up to the passage of time.

As to actually forgiving him...I honestly don't know. I tend to forget about it until someone asks about insults and unintentional barbs, and whenever I think about it I tend to get a bit snippy because given my personality type, not finishing college was never an option for me.

Now that I have one, my Nintendo DSi, especially if I'm going to be stuck in a car/plane for a significant amount of time. Or if I'm stuck in a hotel room because I can't go out and do anything. Further more, I always make sure that I have my digital camera, as I'm something of an amateur landscape photographer. (Various works can be found here.) If I can swing it, I also bring my computer so that I can download photos after I've taken them. I may not be getting online, but it's handy to have to I don't constantly worry about my memory card filling up. If I'm bringing my iPod, I also find it handy to bring my computer so I can charge it if I'm staying in a hotel and spending the day sight seeing. That way I have music while I'm hiking or for in the car.

Since my cell phone is the only way someone can call me, I always have it on me - however I try not to use it much save the occasional phone call or text message, or the really random Facebook update. If someone is calling just to shoot the breeze or is constantly pestering me with texts, I will tell them to knock if off and/or start ignoring them.

You know, this is quite misleading. Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexico's Independence Day. Mexico's Independence Day is on September 16th. Take it from someone who lives in an area with a large immigrant Mexican population and also went through three years of Spanish - which also included learning about Spanish (primarily Mexican, because we were learning Mexican Spanish) holidays. Cinco de Mayo AND Mexico's Independence Day included.

You have failed so hard, it's not even funny.

The Battle of Puebla Day (as Cinco de Mayo is also known) celebrates the victory of the town of Puebla over Napoleon III's forces, who had invaded in order to collect on debts. It took place on May 5th, 1862, after Mexico had declared its independence from Spain.

So Napoleon, thinking that he could strong arm the Mexican's into paying their debts invaded. Puebla was one of the first major skirmishes in the drawn out conflict, which Mexico would ultimately lose. However, there was a brief glimmer of hope with the victory at Puebla and the Mexican people showed that they simply weren't going to bow down to the European forces.

For fuck's sake, people. Before posing such an asinine question, do a little research. You've fallen so hard into the trope of "Didn't Show Their Work" I can't even laugh.

First of all:

Everyone's a little bit racist )

I think it comes down to context. When people are being blatantly cruel about it, I will step in and say that they are being cruel and inappropriate. I have several friends and acquantiences who are in same-sex relationships and several friends who are of different ethnic backgrounds and speaking as a Hispanic female, I think that when someone says something racist or homophobic with the intent to hurt, it isn't okay to let it slide.

When pointing out someone living up to a stereotype, or making a social observation, you may feel that they best way to describe it is making a racist or homophobic comment. It's not that you're intentionally trying to be hurtful, you are simply making a point in terms that people are familiar with.

Aside from the "no eating for eight hours" before my wisdom teeth extraction and the occasional not having something to eat, I never have.  I HAVE tried to cut back on the snacking by drinking more water - and my body agrees with that because apparently I don't drink enough water unless I'm trying to cut back on the snacking.

[Error: unknown template qotd]I have several favorite songs by MJ.

The one that I remember being my ABSOLUTE favorite, particularly as a child, was "Beat It."  And my mother had MTV on constantly, so every time the music video came on I would get up and dance along with it.  As I grew up, I was exposed to more of his work.  "The Way You Make Me Feel" is another that I love, probably because I love the end dance sequence in Center Stage where they're dancing BALLET to it.  BALLET to Michael Jackson, and the thing is, it didn't seem weird or strange.  It worked, and it worked well.

Many of the songs off of the Thriller album (which I believe my mother had on vinyl back in the day) are favorites, along with the Bad and Dangerous albums.  The man was a prolific singer, writer, and performer.  He genuinely believed in peace on Earth and this was reflected in many of his songs.  "Black and White," "Man in the Mirror," and "Earth Song" are examples of Jackson's ultimate belief that all humans were created equal and should be treated equally.  And that's what I ultimately love about his music.  It's all positive and feel good.

[Error: unknown template qotd]That really depends on what I'm doing.  I was a soundtrack whore the entire time I studied for mid-terms and finals or would be working on research papers.  Most of them were anime based (Shojo Kakumei Utena, LAST EXILE, Hellsing) when working on my homework.  I like peppy and upbeat music when I'm cleaning, mostly classic rock, but occasionally techno and dance.  Though there are some days when I'm listening to classical for ALL purposes.
